What Does SNAD Mean? Significantly Not As Described

The claim behind most second-hand disputes, what platforms accept as SNAD and the listing habits that keep it away.

Key takeaways
  • SNAD means the item differs materially from the listing (wrong colour, undisclosed damage, wrong size, different material, counterfeit) — not "I don't like it" or "it doesn't fit".
  • Claim windows differ: Vinted's UK help gives 2 days from the delivery notice, OLX's Pakiet Ochronny gives the buyer 48h, eBay UK's Money Back Guarantee gives 30 days.
  • SNAD and INAD are the same complaint: SNAD on Vinted and in reseller slang, INAD in eBay's US wording.
  • Who pays return shipping depends on the platform: the buyer on Vinted, the seller under OLX's Pakiet Ochronny, and the seller on eBay US for not-as-described items.
  • Accurate measurements, honest condition notes and full disclosure of flaws are what actually prevent a SNAD claim, not arguing after the fact.

SNAD stands for significantly not as described: a buyer's claim that what arrived does not match the listing, in colour, size, material, damage or authenticity. It's the term Vinted and reseller communities use; eBay's US site calls the same complaint INAD. This page covers what counts, what doesn't, how sellers keep it from happening and how the claim runs on three marketplaces. For the full picture of selling on the platform, see the Vinted reseller guide.

SNAD in one sentence

A SNAD claim says the item is materially different from what the listing promised — not that the buyer changed their mind. Vinted and second-hand forums write "SNAD"; eBay's US help pages write "INAD" for the identical idea. Both sit under a wider buyer-protection scheme, not a general returns policy.

What counts as SNAD on Vinted

Vinted's UK help page lists specific reasons: wrong colour, incorrect size, undisclosed missing parts or damage, a different main material, a counterfeit item, or functionality that doesn't work as described. The claim only applies to "Buy now" purchases covered by Buyer Protection, and the buyer has 2 days from Vinted's delivery notice to raise it — miss that window, or tap "Everything is OK", and the order completes with the seller paid. The full claim-and-return process, including the 5-business-day return deadline and the seller's inspection window, is covered in Vinted returns and disputes; this page won't repeat it.

What does not count as SNAD

The same Vinted help page is specific about what's excluded: the item simply not fitting, minor differences caused by lighting in photos, and wear on electronics that the listing already disclosed. A buyer who just doesn't like the item, or who changed their mind after buying, has no automatic right to return it from a private seller — Vinted's help page says they need to discuss it with the seller directly instead.

How sellers avoid SNAD claims

Most SNAD claims start with a listing that oversells the item. Vinted's own reasons — wrong colour, wrong size, undisclosed damage, wrong material — are all things a careful listing can rule out before a buyer ever opens the parcel:

  • Measure the item flat and put the numbers in the description, not just a size tag — see how to measure clothes for Vinted
  • Photograph every flaw, stain or repair in daylight, even small ones
  • Name the actual material on the care label, not the material you assume it is
  • State authenticity honestly — say "no longer have the receipt" rather than implying a brand you can't confirm

A description template built to head off these claims covers wording for condition, measurements and material line by line, and measuring clothes correctly is where most wrong-size claims start. Accurate listings are also what reva's List module, in early access, is meant to help with once it's generally available — it drafts listing text for you to check and post, not a claims tool.

SNAD on OLX and eBay

The claim exists in some form on most marketplaces, with different names, windows and costs.

OLX's Pakiet Ochronny (Annex 8 to its Terms) covers an order sent through Przesyłka OLX that doesn't match the listing — title, description, photos, quantity, function, colour, size, undisclosed damage, or a "new" item that shows wear. It does not cover a buyer's change of mind. eBay's UK Money Back Guarantee gives 30 days from delivery, or the seller's own return window if it's longer, and it still applies even when a private seller doesn't normally accept returns. How returns for private sellers work more broadly is in handling returns as a private seller.

Vinted's Terms are due to update on 8 October 2026 in Poland and the UK; press coverage from Value Added Resource reports the counterfeit-claim evidence window moving from 24h to 48h for sellers, so check the updated Terms once they take effect.

Not every claim is genuine

Some buyers file a SNAD claim to pressure a refund after wearing or using an item rather than because it's genuinely different from the listing — a pattern covered in Vinted buyer scams. The photos you took before shipping (see above) are exactly what lets you push back on a claim like that instead of just accepting it.

Frequently asked questions

Is 'it doesn't fit' a SNAD reason?
No. Vinted's UK help page lists fit as an example of what does not count as significantly not as described, alongside minor lighting differences in photos and disclosed wear on electronics. A buyer who wants to return an item that simply doesn't fit has no automatic right to do so from a private seller and has to discuss it with you directly.
Who pays return postage on a SNAD claim?
It depends on the marketplace. Vinted's UK help page says the buyer pays for return shipping once a claim is accepted, though a seller can offer to cover it. OLX's Pakiet Ochronny puts the return at the seller's cost. eBay's US policy has the seller pay return shipping whenever the reason is not as described; eBay UK's help says the same: the seller pays return postage when the item doesn't match the listing.
What is the difference between SNAD and INAD?
They describe the same complaint under different names. SNAD (significantly not as described) is the term used on Vinted and in reseller communities; INAD (item not as described) is the wording eBay uses in the US. Both mean the item the buyer received does not match what the listing promised.
