Inventory Turnover Calculator

How many times your stock turns back into cash in a period, and how many days that takes.

Inventory turnover calculator with cost of items sold, stock value at start and end, and days to sell inventory
Key takeaways
  • Turnover = cost of items sold in the period ÷ ((stock at cost at the start + stock at cost at the end) ÷ 2). Days to sell inventory = period length ÷ turnover.
  • The calculator's turnover covers the period you enter, not a year. To annualise, multiply by 365 ÷ period days.
  • Profit per period = average stock at cost × turnover × ROI on cost, so stock needed for a profit goal = goal ÷ (turnover × ROI).
  • Cash you need is stock at cost plus the cost of goods waiting between sale and payout, which on Vinted UK and OLX.pl includes a buyer window after delivery.
  • No outside turnover benchmark is used here: set your target from the cash you can tie up or the days you can wait.

An inventory turnover calculator tells you how many times the money in your stock came back out as sold goods during a period, and how many days that took on average. Enter the cost of items sold, stock value at cost at the start and end, and the number of days. Below: the exact formula, valuing one-off pieces, and how turnover and ROI set the cash you need.

How to use the inventory turnover calculator

  1. Cost of items sold in the period. Add up what you paid for every item that sold, including delivery to you and cleaning or repair. COGS for resellers settles what else belongs there.
  2. Inventory value at start (at cost) and Inventory value at end (at cost). Everything you own and haven't sold: listed, waiting for photos, or still in the bag from the lumpeks.
  3. Length of the period (days). Use the same dates for all three numbers.

The currency selector changes the label only.

The turnover formula with cost of goods

The calculator runs exactly this:

average inventory = (inventory at start + inventory at end) ÷ 2 turnover = cost of items sold ÷ average inventory days to sell inventory = period length in days ÷ turnover

Turnover covers your period only. To compare a 90-day result with a yearly figure, multiply by 365 ÷ 90.

Now say those items sold for 4,400 zł. Dividing that by stock at cost gives 2.0 and 45 days: your markup hides a month of waiting.

Average inventory value for one-off items

You have one of each item, so value each at its own cost:

  • Lots. Split the lot price across the pieces and keep that split. Example: a 300 zł bag of 10 pieces is 30 zł each.
  • Unlisted stock. A pile waiting for photos ties up cash too.
  • Returns and write-offs. A return goes back into stock; an item you bin leaves stock but isn't a sale.
  • Uneven buying. Two snapshots miss a big haul bought mid-period. Take stock value at the end of each month, average those yourself, and enter that figure in both the start and end fields.

The inventory and profit tracker spreadsheet has buy date, cost and sale date columns, so a monthly snapshot is a filter, not a count.

Turnover in days

Days to sell inventory blends all your stock, so quick sellers can hide a coat that has sat for five months. For per-item timing, measure your own days to sell on Vinted.

  • If days rise period after period while cost of items sold stays flat, stock is ageing. Find the categories behind it before buying more of them, and use the exits for unsold inventory for pieces markdowns haven't moved.
  • If turnover rose because of deep markdowns, check ROI for the same period before celebrating: profit can fall.
  • Before buying into a slow category, check resale demand on comparable listings.

Turnover and cash flow

Turnover says how fast cash cycles; ROI on cost says how much each cycle earns. Together:

profit per period = average inventory at cost × turnover × ROI on cost stock needed for a goal = profit goal ÷ (turnover × ROI on cost)

Example: in the quarter above, a 50% ROI gives 2,200 × 1.2 × 0.5 = 1,320 zł. Now aim for 2,000 zł profit per 90 days:

Example scenario Turnover (90 days) ROI on cost Stock at cost needed
As now 1.2 50% about 3,333 zł
Faster stock 2.0 50% 2,000 zł
Better buys 1.2 80% about 2,083 zł

Before adding about 1,130 zł of stock, ask whether turnover or ROI is easier for you to move.

Stock is not the whole bill. A sold item's cost leaves stock at the sale, but its money arrives later:

Cash cycle from purchase to payout
  1. 1BuyCash leaves; the item enters stock at cost.
  2. 2Prepare and listCleaning, photos, listing. Still stock.
  3. 3Wait for a buyerThe days that turnover measures.
  4. 4Ship and deliverCost moves to cost of items sold; no cash yet.
  5. 5Buyer windowVinted UK: pending balance, buyer has 2 days after delivery. OLX.pl: payout ordered on confirmation, or 48h after pickup or delivery if no claim is filed.
  6. 6Money reaches youVinted UK: payment within 2 days of completion; bank withdrawal up to 5 business days.
Timings from Vinted UK Help (Vinted Balance; withdrawing earnings) and OLX.pl Terms §11.7, checked 13 Sept 2026. Payout timing for Vinted Poland, France and Germany was not checked.

Add that gap to the stock figure. Example: 2,640 zł of cost a quarter is about 29 zł a day; say money takes 10 days from sale to bank, and about 290 zł more is out at any time. If you sell as Vinted Pro in the UK, orders auto-complete after 14 days unless the buyer raises an issue, so use a longer gap. Our sources don't say how long OLX's transfer takes after the payout order.

Setting your own turnover target

This page gives no "good" turnover number: we found no source that measures it reliably for resellers. Set the target from your own limits instead:

target from cash = planned cost of items sold ÷ stock at cost you're willing to hold target from time = period days ÷ average days you accept an item in stock

If your actual turnover is below the target, look at the categories with the longest days first, not at your whole stock.

Turnover vs sell-through rate

If sell-through holds while turnover falls, cheap pieces are moving and expensive ones sit. The sell-through rate calculator covers the item side; the inventory management guide for resellers shows what to record so both come from one log.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing sales revenue by stock at cost
  • Reading a 90-day turnover as a yearly one
  • Leaving unlisted stock out of inventory value
  • Taking start and end snapshots either side of one big haul
  • Judging all stock by one blended days figure

Frequently asked questions

How do I set my own turnover target?
Work back from limits you actually have. Example: you can keep 3,000 zł tied up in stock and plan to sell 4,500 zł of goods at cost per quarter, so your target is 1.5 a quarter. If you'd rather items sell within 60 days on average, the quarterly target is 90 ÷ 60 = 1.5 as well. Use the lower of the two, then compare it with your real result category by category.
Should I use sale price or cost?
Cost, on both sides. Stock is valued at what you paid, so dividing sales revenue by stock at cost mixes two units and adds your markup to the result. The wider your margin, the faster your stock appears to move, and a price rise alone would look like better turnover. Revenue belongs in profit and ROI.
How is turnover different from sell-through?
Sell-through counts items: how many of the pieces you had available sold. Turnover counts money at cost: how many times the value of your average stock went out as sold goods. Twenty cheap tops can sell while one expensive coat sits, giving strong sell-through and weak turnover in the same month. Read both per category before deciding what to buy more of.
