How to Resell Used Books
A single book is light on value and heavy on postage. ISBN, edition and smart bundles decide whether it is worth listing.

- ISBN identifies the edition, not the printing — the same ISBN can cover several print runs, so check the imprint page for the exact edition details.
- Run the postage test before listing: if fees and shipping consume most of the price, bundle or offer local pickup instead.
- Vinted is free for sellers but the buyer pays a fee (around 5% + 2.90 zł) and chooses shipping; on Allegro Lokalnie the seller pays a 7.9% fee if the buyer pays within 72 hours.
- Bundle by author, series or subject — Vinted has specific bundle labelling rules that make combined shipping work smoothly.
Selling used books is simple in theory: find a book, list it, ship it. In practice, three things kill your margin invisibly. First, the ISBN on your copy may not match the edition buyers want. Second, the postage on a single cheap book can eat the entire profit. Third, most sellers price against the wrong comparables and never check whether the numbers actually work after fees and shipping.
This page covers how to identify books correctly, the condition terms buyers understand, when to bundle versus ship solo, and the postage math that decides whether a listing is worth your time. This guide is part of our resale category guides, which cover the main resale verticals.
Identifying the book: ISBN, edition and print run
Every book sold in Poland after 2007 should have a 13-digit ISBN starting with 978 or 979. Poland's group identifier is 83, found in the middle of the ISBN. However, using ISBN is voluntary — older books, self-published titles and some small-press releases may have no ISBN at all.
The key rule from Biblioteka Narodowa: a significantly changed new edition gets a new ISBN, but an unchanged reprint (dodruk) keeps the same ISBN as before. This means the same ISBN can cover several print runs over years. The ISBN tells you the edition, not the specific printing.
To identify your copy accurately:
- Find the ISBN on the back cover barcode or the imprint page inside
- Note the publisher, year and edition number from the imprint page
- Search the marketplace by exact ISBN to see what buyers are actually asking for
- If no ISBN exists, describe by publisher, year, cover type and any visible edition marks
Reading copies, collectible copies and textbooks
Buyers evaluate books in three broad categories. Reading copies are books people bought to read and are now selling after — they may have mild wear, underlining or notes. Collectible copies are desirable for their condition, rarity or edition significance. Textbooks are evaluated by whether a newer edition exists.
For textbooks specifically: check the exact ISBN on the imprint page. If a newer edition has a different ISBN and is widely available, the older edition's value drops sharply. Search for your ISBN and see what price comparable listings show — if none exist above delivery cost, the book is unlikely to sell.

Condition terms that work across marketplaces:
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| As new | No visible wear, no marks, dust jacket perfect if applicable |
| Very good | Minor wear, perhaps a crease on the spine, no damage |
| Good | Visible wear but complete, no missing pages |
| Acceptable | Underlining, notes, library stamps or damage described |
Always photograph any flaws honestly. A buyer who receives a book matching your description is far less likely to open a dispute.
Bundling by author, series or subject
Vinted and Allegro Lokalnie both support bundle listings, and this is where books economics improve dramatically. A single cheap book may not survive the postage test, but a bundle of five books shares one delivery cost across the whole sale. For more on bundling strategy, see our pricing bundles and lots guide.
Vinted's bundle labelling works like this: you create a single listing and the buyer sees all items together, pays one shipping fee, and receives one tracking number. On Allegro Lokalnie, list each item separately but mention in the description that you offer combined shipping.
- 1Identify by ISBNCheck imprint page for edition details
- 2Search comparable listingsListings exist above delivery cost? - Yes → list single / No
- 3Can it join a bundle?Same author, series or subject → bundle / No → local pickup or donate
Bundle by theme: all thrillers by one author, textbooks from the same university course, romance novels, or children's picture books. A coherent bundle attracts buyers who want more than one title and reduces your per-item shipping cost to zero.
Weight and postage: the hidden margin killer
This is where most book resellers lose money without realising it. On Vinted, the buyer pays the Buyer Protection fee (around 5% + 2.90 zł) on top of your price and chooses shipping, so nothing is deducted from the price you set. The trap is on the buyer's side: a 10 zł book costs them about 13.40 zł before shipping, so cheap books look expensive and sell slowly — bundle them.
On Allegro Lokalnie, the numbers are different. Local listings are free. For "Kup teraz" or auction, the fee is 7.9% if the buyer pays within 72 hours or uses the delivery form. Delivery through Allegro Paczkomaty InPost costs 10.95 zł; Allegro One Box costs 10.49 zł. These exact figures come from the Allegro Lokalnie fee page.
- Allegro Lokalnie fee (7.9%)1.58 zł
- Packaging1 zł
- Your net (before shipping)17.42 zł
The rule: run the postage test every time. Take your listing price, subtract the marketplace fee, subtract realistic packaging. For example, say you use a mailer and tape — that costs about 1 zł. More detail on shipping costs and hidden costs is in our marketplace shipping rules and hidden costs of reselling guides.

Pricing books against comparable listings
Price by matching the exact ISBN first. If the book has no ISBN, match by publisher, year, edition and condition as closely as possible. Look at what other sellers are asking, not what they are selling for — Vinted does not show sold prices, so you are estimating demand from ask prices alone.
A practical rule: price at the lower end of the comparable range if you want a fast sale, or at median if you can wait. If no comparable listings exist at any price, the book is either very rare (price it higher but expect a longer hold) or unwanted (consider donation instead).
Where books sell: Vinted, OLX, Allegro Lokalnie
Vinted works for popular fiction, children's books and mass-market paperbacks. Selling is free for individuals; the buyer pays the Buyer Protection fee (around 5% + 2.90 zł) and chooses shipping. You have 5 business days to ship. Vinted's Terms change on 8 October 2026 for Poland — the buyer fee is being renamed but the structure remains similar.
OLX offers 10 free listings per month for private users in the Książki category (at the time of writing, September 2026). This makes OLX attractive for bundling — you can list a set of 10 books for free, each as a separate item in the same category, and offer combined local pickup. OLX does not have a built-in bundle feature the way Vinted does.
Allegro Lokalnie is ideal for collectible titles and textbook sales. Local listings cost 0 zł; "Kup teraz" or auction listings charge 7.9% if the buyer pays within 72 hours or uses the delivery form. The delivery options (InPost 10.95 zł, One Box 10.49 zł) are competitive with other marketplaces.
For textbooks specifically, check whether the exact ISBN you have matches what students are searching for. A textbook with a new edition available is hard to sell; one where the older edition is still used on courses can command a decent price.
All three platforms ship nationally. For international reach, Vinted has cross-border options within the EU, but the economics of shipping books across borders rarely work unless you are selling rare or valuable titles. Similar category guides exist for vinyl records and board games if you want to expand into other collectibles.
