Hidden costs of reselling: the checklist

A cost is hidden if it never appears on the sale screen, or if you pay it when nothing sells:

• Promotions bought for listings that later sold, were deleted or never sold
• Return labels you paid and outbound postage lost on refunded sales
• Mailers, tape, boxes, labels and printing
• Currency conversion and international fees on cross-border orders
• Orders cancelled because you missed a shipping or confirmation deadline
• Items sent for authentication and the extra days before payout
• Hours per item, including messages, drop-offs and returns

The headline fee here is 9.48 zł; everything you pay to sell the item is 28.93 zł, about three times as much.

Promotion fees: bumps, highlights, refreshes

• OLX. Annex 2 lists Odświeżenie (refresh), Wyróżnienie for 3, 7 or 30 days, and Pakiet Mini, Midi and Maxi. The Terms say a promotion cannot be reactivated if the listing is deleted, the item sells or the listing is changed to a different item, and the unused fee is not refunded. Prices appear during publication, not in the documents.
• Vinted. A Bump runs 3 or 7 days "or until the item sells". No Bump price is published; it is shown at payment.

Example (invented amounts, not OLX or Vinted prices): you spend 60 zł on promotions across 12 listings and 5 sell. That is 12 zł per sold item, not the 5 zł per promoted listing you had in mind.

Decision rule: for an item you expect to sell within days, buy the shortest duration, because unused days are lost. Whether a Vinted Bump pays for itself is worked through in is a Vinted bump worth it.

Returns and claims as a cost line

Claim rules live on the platform pages; this is what a return costs:

Even with a fee refunded, outbound postage, mailer and hours are gone. OLX's help article gives pickup windows for returned parcels: 48h at InPost, 72h at Orlen Paczka, 7 days at Poczta Polska.

Packaging, printing and supplies

Supplies are bought in packs, so they vanish from per-item maths. Convert them:

Example: 100 mailers for 45 zł, plus 12 zł of tape and 18 zł of printing used over 30 parcels. A mailer is 0.45 zł, but tape and printing add 1 zł per parcel, so each parcel costs 1.45 zł.

Decision rule: reused boxes count as zero, but photograph each packed item: a damaged parcel can become a claim.

Currency conversion and international fees

Official pages, checked 13 Sept 2026:

• eBay UK, UK-registered private seller: no final value fee at home, but a 3% international fee on the total sale when delivery is outside the UK, and a 2.5% seller currency conversion charge.
• eBay.de, private: 5% international fee on items listed on ebay.de delivered outside Germany; 3% currency conversion (also 3% for eBay.pl sellers).
• Vinted: the UK Terms (version of 30 April 2026) mention a conversion fee of "either 1.2% or 3% of the Item price", charged by the payment processor where offered, without saying which countries get which rate.

Example: a £60 eBay UK private sale delivered to Ireland pays at least £1.80 in international fee, more if postage counts towards the total sale.

Cancelled orders and missed shipping deadlines

A missed deadline costs the sale plus the days the item was reserved.

• Vinted (UK, PL, FR, DE help pages): ship within 5 business days or the order is cancelled automatically. You can ask the buyer for 3 or 5 extra business days; the buyer can refuse.
• OLX (Terms §11.8): the buyer is refunded automatically if you don't confirm the sale within 72h, reject it, or don't hand the parcel to the carrier within 3 working days of accepting.
• Allegro Lokalnie: no fee unless the buyer pays within 72h or fills in the delivery form, so an unpaid order costs only time.

Decision rule: if you can't reach a parcel locker within 3 working days, don't accept the OLX order yet. On Vinted, ask for the extension before day 5.

Verification and authentication costs

For a seller, authentication is rarely a fee. It costs a slower payout and sometimes an item sent back.

• Buying on Vinted: Item Verification is a buyer service at 45 zł in Poland (£10 in the UK), Electronics Verification 20 zł (£5). Added to stock you buy, it belongs in cost of goods. Example: a 300 zł bag on vinted.pl with the usual buyer fee of 5% + 2.90 zł (17.90 zł) plus 45 zł verification carries 62.90 zł of extras before shipping, about 21% of its price.
• Selling on eBay: the Authenticity Guarantee is free to the seller and automatic for eligible items. Inspection generally takes 2 business days after the item reaches the authenticator; a failed item returns to you and the buyer is refunded. On eBay.com, payout is held until 24 hours after the item passes and ships.

Your time: profit per hour

Example: the 120 zł sale in the figure makes 46.07 zł over 1.5 hours: 30.71 zł per hour. Say the hourly rate you have set yourself is 35 zł. The item then needed 52.50 zł of net profit, or no more than about 1 hour 19 minutes of work.

Decision rule: if a category keeps landing below your own hourly figure, change what you buy or batch the work before raising prices.
