Where to Sell Watches

The right platform depends on the price band, not the brand logo alone.

Three watches in a row on a dealer's tray — a scratched beater, a mid-range dress watch with its papers, and a boxed chronograph with warranty card
Key takeaways
  • Let the price band pick the market: general marketplaces for lower-value pieces, eBay's automatic authenticity check from $2,000 (US), £1,500 (UK) or €1,500 (DE), and Chrono24's 6.5% commission route for documented higher-value watches.
  • Chrono24 charges private sellers 6.5% only after a sale, keeps listing free, and releases escrow within 7 days of delivery (checked 13 September 2026).
  • eBay's watch check is automatic and free to the seller: the watch ships seller, authenticator, buyer, with inspection generally inside 2 business days and the US payout hold released 24 hours after the item passes.
  • Paperwork is money: box, stamped papers and service receipts move a watch toward set-minded buyers, so document what you have before you list.
  • Every platform number on this page was checked on 13 September 2026; fees change, so re-read the platform's own page before you price.

Where to sell watches is decided by the watch's price band and your paperwork, not by habit. A beater, a mid-range piece and a documented chronograph are three different products in three different markets: general marketplaces bring reach but leave the authenticity question with you, eBay checks watches automatically above a price threshold, and Chrono24 puts a watch in front of dedicated watch buyers for a 6.5% commission. This page sorts the routes by band, fee and proof, with every platform number checked on 13 September 2026.

Three watch markets, three platforms

Sort your watch into one of three bands before you pick a platform. Under roughly €300, buyers accept the risk themselves and low-cost marketplaces win; in the middle band, roughly €300 to €2,000, eBay's authenticity check starts to matter — the thresholds differ by market, as the next sections show; above it, the specialist route earns its commission through audience and escrow. These bands are our framing to organise the choice, not platform rules.

The second axis is documentation. A watch with box, stamped papers and service history sells to a different buyer than the same head without papers, and the second axis decides the price before the platform does. What the piece itself is worth, before any fee, is the job of the watch resale guide.

General marketplaces: reach vs authenticity fears

On Vinted, your asking price stands and the fee falls on the buyer at checkout: usually 5% + 2.90 zł in Poland, and usually 3% to 8% + £0.30–£0.80 in the UK, per the price lists we read on 13 September 2026. Updated Vinted Terms take effect on 8 October 2026 in the UK and Poland (5 October in Germany and France), and the buyer charge is being renamed the "Vinted fee", so re-check the price list after that date. The Vinted pages we read describe no authentication for watches, which is why the platform suits lower-value pieces where the buyer prices the photo, not the papers.

In Poland, classifieds such as OLX add local cash sales to the mix: no parcel, no delivery claim window, but a smaller buyer pool for a niche item like a watch. For a deeper comparison of the general marketplaces, see Vinted vs Vestiaire Collective.

eBay for watches: the authenticity guarantee route

eBay's Authenticity Guarantee is the middle band's answer to the trust problem. Enrolment is automatic for eligible items, free to the seller, with no opt-in or opt-out: the watch ships from you to the authenticator to the buyer, inspection generally takes 2 business days, and a watch that fails is returned to you while the buyer is refunded.

Where it applies to watches, checked 13 September 2026:

  • US: wristwatches and pocket watches at $2,000+ mandatory; a buyer-paid $80 option covers $500–$1,999.99; smart watches, parts and accessories are excluded.
  • UK: watches at £1,500+ mandatory; a buyer-paid £99 option covers £500–£1,499.99.
  • Germany: watches at €1,500+ mandatory; a buyer-paid €100 option covers €500–€1,499.99.

On the US site, the payout hold on an Authenticity Guarantee order is released 24 hours after the item passes inspection and ships. Fees differ sharply by market: eBay US charges Watches, Parts & Accessories sellers 15% up to $1,000, 6.5% from $1,000 to $7,500 and 3% above that; UK-based private sellers pay no final value fee in any category except Motors (Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles), while UK business sellers pay 12.9% up to £750 on watches, parts and accessories (3% above); eBay Poland has no free-selling programme for private sellers — 11% of the sale up to 9,990 zł plus a small per-order fee. The UK rates are broken down in eBay fees for UK sellers.

Specialist platforms: Chrono24's model in brief

Chrono24 charges private sellers 6.5%, due only after a sale, and listing is free — at the time of writing (September 2026). The commission is retained when Chrono24 releases the escrow payment, and escrow pays the seller within 7 days of delivery of the watch; if a buyer paid directly outside escrow, the commission arrives as an invoice payable within 14 days. Chrono24 reports EU taxpayers under DAC7 from 30 transactions or €2,000 in a calendar year. Listing caps for private sellers are not stated publicly on the pages we read.

Sneaker-first platforms also carry watches. StockX's help page, which shows no date, lists a transaction fee of 9% down to 7% by seller level plus a 3% processing fee, with regional minimums (€5.00 in the EU, £4.50 in the UK) — but the same page is silent on payout timing, so treat it as a starting point, not a quote.

What paperwork and photos move a watch sale

The documents decide which buyer pool you can even enter. Before you list:

  • Box and outer card: photograph them together
  • Stamped warranty card or papers: show the stamp, not just the card
  • Service receipts: they prove the movement was maintained, not just owned
  • Removed links: count them, bag them, photograph them
  • Serial number: one close photo of the engraving, plus the case back
  • Clasp, crown and dial macro shots: scratches named in words, not hidden

No papers does not block a sale; it moves the watch toward buyers who price the head alone, which is why the honest listing says exactly what is missing. Pricing a piece from comparables instead of hope is the method in the resale pricing guide.

Two honest gaps in that table: Chrono24's authentication process is not published on the pages we read, and we did not verify Vinted payout timing for this page — Vinted's UK help pages state payment within 2 days of an order completing and withdrawals in up to 5 business days. We would rather show the gap than invent an answer. To model your own numbers per route, the marketplace fee calculator takes each platform's percentage and the parcel cost.

Choosing: a short decision table

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to sell an expensive watch?
For a documented piece, Chrono24 puts the watch in front of dedicated watch buyers for a 6.5% private commission, and escrow releases your money within 7 days of delivery. On eBay, watches from $2,000 (US), £1,500 (UK) or €1,500 (Germany) get the automatic authenticity check at no cost to you. Without box or papers, expect buyers to discount, so run comparables on the watch resale route first.
Does eBay authenticate watches?
In the markets we checked on 13 September 2026: US wristwatches and pocket watches at $2,000 and up, UK watches at £1,500 and up, and German watches at €1,500 and up. Enrolment is automatic and free to the seller, with no opt-out: the watch ships from you to the authenticator to the buyer, and inspection generally takes 2 business days. The US adds a buyer-paid $80 option for watches at $500–$1,999.99, and smart watches are excluded there.
What fees does Chrono24 charge sellers?
Private sellers pay 6.5%, due only after a sale, and listing is free. Chrono24 retains the commission when it releases the escrow payment, and escrow pays out within 7 days of delivery. If a buyer paid directly outside escrow, the commission arrives as an invoice payable within 14 days. Chrono24 also reports EU taxpayers under DAC7 once you pass 30 transactions or €2,000 in a calendar year.
What should I include when selling a watch?
Everything that helps a buyer trust the piece: the box, the stamped warranty card or papers, service receipts, and removed links in a labelled bag. Photograph the dial, case back, serial number area and clasp close up, and describe scratches in words as well as photos. A full set attracts set-minded buyers; a head-only watch prices against head-only comparables, not full-set asking prices.
Is Vinted any good for watches?
For lower-value fashion watches, it can be: your asking price stands and the buyer pays a fee at checkout — usually 5% + 2.90 zł in Poland, usually 3% to 8% + £0.30–£0.80 in the UK (price lists, checked 13 September 2026). The Vinted pages we read describe no watch authentication (its paid Item Verification service exists, but those pages do not say it covers watches), so your photos and description carry the sale. Updated Vinted Terms take effect 8 October 2026 in the UK and Poland, and 5 October 2026 in Germany and France.
