Watch Resale Guide

How box, papers and service history move the price of a pre-owned watch.

Key takeaways
  • Price a watch from comps of the same reference number and the same completeness: a full set and a watch-only example are two different items.
  • Measure the box-and-papers premium as the difference between two medians, and trust it only as far as the comp count behind each group.
  • Chrono24 charges private sellers 6.5% after a sale, with escrow paying out within 7 days of delivery (checked 13 Sept 2026). Example: a €2,000 sale leaves €1,870 before shipping.
  • eBay UK and eBay.de authenticate watches automatically and free to the seller from £1,500 / €1,500; optional checks cost £99 or €100 from £500 / €500.
  • On eBay UK and eBay.de a buyer can claim not as described for 30 days after delivery even if you exclude returns, so disclose polishing and replaced parts.

Watch resale comes down to the exact reference number, what comes with the watch, and the route you sell through. A full set with box, papers and service records is a different item from the bare watch, so price each from its own comparables. Then pick the route: at the time of writing (September 2026), Chrono24 charges private sellers 6.5% after a sale, while eBay UK and eBay.de authenticate watches automatically from £1,500 and €1,500. If the route is still open, where to sell watches compares general marketplaces, eBay's authentication route and specialist platforms for a private sale.

Platform facts below come from Chrono24's and eBay's own pages, checked on 13 September 2026. Every other number is an example.

What sets a pre-owned watch's price

The unit of pricing is the reference number, not the brand or model family: two watches that look alike can carry different references and movements. The general method is in the resale pricing guide; these are the watch-specific inputs.

Factor What to record
Reference number Reference and serial, photographed
Completeness Box, papers, extra links: exactly what is included
Service history Date, who serviced it, receipt
Condition Case, bracelet, crystal and dial, each photographed
Originality Which parts were replaced, and when

Decision rule: if you can't read the reference from the watch or its papers, don't price it off comps of a similar-looking model.

Box, papers and service records

Split comps by completeness before you take any median, then measure the premium instead of assuming one:

full-set premium = median of full-set comps − median of watch-only comps

How many comps make a number trustworthy is covered in how to find sold comps. Count a full set only if the serial on the card matches the case, and a service record only if it shows a date and the work done.

Servicing before a sale is a cost decision: do it only if the gap between serviced and unserviced comps beats the quote plus the time off the market.

Condition, polishing and replaced parts

Record condition as separate notes, each with a photo:

  • Case edges and lugs: sharp or softened; if you don't know whether it was polished, say so
  • Bracelet stretch, clasp wear and links included
  • Crystal and dial marks
  • Whether it runs and sets; no accuracy claims you haven't measured
  • Replaced parts, with receipts

Disclosure protects the sale. eBay UK's and eBay.de's buyer-protection policies let a buyer claim "not as described" for 30 days after delivery, or longer if your return window is longer, even when a private seller excludes returns.

Decision rule: if you know a part isn't original, say so in the description and price from comps that disclose the same.

Low liquidity: why watches sell slowly

One reference is a narrow search, each purchase ties up more cash than a typical clothing flip, and buyers want evidence before paying. That can mean few exits to learn from and long gaps between them. In best things to resell in Europe, watches score last on structural factors.

Measure the wait for your reference:

chance to leave the market in N days = listings that left within N days ÷ listings tracked

Example: you follow 10 listings of one reference for 30 days and 2 disappear, so the chance in this example is 20% over 30 days, and an exit may not be a sale. How to check resale demand explains how to set the window.

Decision rule: if your tracked listings show no exits within the time you can afford to wait, buy only at a price that still works at the fast-sell level (see choosing a price level).

Chrono24 for private sellers

Chrono24's offer page and FAQ, checked on 13 September 2026, state:

  • Commission: 6.5%, due only after a sale; listing is free.
  • Collection: kept back from the escrow payout; if the buyer paid directly, an invoice payable within 14 days.
  • Payout: with escrow, "within 7 days of delivery of the watch".
  • DAC7: EU taxpayers with 30 or more transactions or €2,000 or more in a calendar year are reported.

Example: a watch sells for €2,000 with escrow. Commission is €2,000 × 6.5% = €130, so €1,870 arrives within 7 days of delivery, before your shipping and insurance. The pages we read don't say whether shipping is in the commission base, so check your first statement.

Poland's Ministry of Finance says DAC7 creates no new tax. This is general information, not tax advice: ask a tax adviser, and see DAC7 for resellers.

eBay authentication for watches

On eBay UK and eBay.de, authentication is automatic for eligible watches, free to the seller and can't be switched off. The watch goes to an authenticator, inspection is generally done within 2 business days of arrival, and a watch that fails or isn't as described comes back to you while the buyer is refunded. Local pickup, PO boxes and customised items are excluded. eBay.de's help page gives €1,500; an older seller-portal snippet said €1,800, so re-check near the line.

Fees depend on where you live. eBay UK charges UK-based private sellers no final value fee outside Motors. A private seller based in Poland pays 12.8% + 30p on eBay.co.uk, 3% on the part above £5,000, plus a 0.42% regulatory fee. On eBay.de, an EEA-resident private seller pays nothing when the watch is delivered in Germany; eBay Germany fees covers the conditions.

Finding comparable listings

Rank evidence by what it proves:

  1. eBay sold prices for the same reference are transactions. On eBay UK private sales the displayed price includes the buyer's protection fee, so it isn't what the seller received.
  2. Chrono24 listings are asks. Our research did not cover whether Chrono24 shows completed sales, so they show your competition, not what a buyer paid.
  3. Vinted, OLX and Allegro Lokalnie show no public sold history on the pages we read. Log the last price of listings that disappear; an exit is not proof of a sale.

Use other markets to confirm the range, then price from comps on the route you'll sell through.

Risks: fakes, frankenwatches and payment fraud

Fakes. Below eBay's thresholds, the buyer's trust rests on your evidence. Vinted's Catalogue Rules call counterfeits "strictly forbidden", including counterfeit spare parts and accessories. Vinted's updated Terms take effect on 5 October 2026 in Germany and France and 8 October 2026 in the UK, US and Poland, so re-check the rules then. Red flags when buying are in how to spot fake listings.

Frankenwatches. A frankenwatch is assembled from parts of different watches. The parts may be genuine, but calling it original invites a not-as-described claim.

Payment fraud. Keep payment inside the platform's checkout, and ship only once the platform confirms it. On Chrono24, escrow pays you after delivery; a direct payment still leaves the commission invoice.

Frequently asked questions

What fee does Chrono24 charge private sellers?
Chrono24's private-seller pages, checked on 13 September 2026, give a 6.5% commission, due only once the watch sells; listing costs nothing. With escrow it is kept back from your payout. If the buyer paid you directly, Chrono24 invoices you, payable within 14 days. Third-party sites mention a cap on simultaneous private listings, but Chrono24's own pages we read do not state one.
Does eBay authenticate watches in Germany?
Yes. eBay.de's Echtheitsprüfung help page, read on 13 September 2026, makes authentication automatic and free to the seller for watches from €1,500. From €500 to €1,499.99 the buyer can add a €100 check. An older eBay seller-portal snippet named €1,800, so if your price sits near the line, open the live help page before listing.
How much do box and papers add?
No marketplace publishes a figure, and one percentage would hide how much it differs between references. Measure it: collect comps of your reference in similar condition, split them into full sets and watch-only, and subtract one median from the other. If either group rests on a couple of comps, keep your full-set price near the watch-only level until more evidence appears.
Should I service a watch before reselling?
Only if the numbers support it. Compare comps with and without a documented recent service, then subtract the service quote and the cost of the weeks the watch is away. If the result is negative, sell it unserviced and describe what you know, such as when it was last serviced and whether it runs. Keep every receipt: it becomes part of the papers.
