How to Spot Fakes and Replica Listings Before You Buy

Photo, price and seller red flags, plus the verification services marketplaces offer.

Two trainer listings side by side, one with catalogue photos and a run of sizes, the other with close-ups of the size label and box
Key takeaways
  • A deep discount on a branded item is a reason to ask for evidence, not a reason to hurry. Set your own trigger below your fast-sell price and ask for label, serial and box photos every time a listing crosses it.
  • Replica farms show up as a seller pattern: the same "new" model in a run of sizes, catalogue or reused photos, and prices well under the market. Open the seller's profile before you study the item.
  • Vinted's checks are optional, paid by the buyer and limited to eligible listings; eBay's is automatic and free to the seller above its thresholds. Any verification fee you pay belongs in your buy cost.
  • If a fake arrives from Vinted, don't press "Everything is OK" and don't relist it: a counterfeit counts as significantly not as described, and the claim window is 2 days from Vinted's delivery notice.

To spot fake items on Vinted, check what surrounds the item before the item itself: the seller's other listings, whether the photos are the seller's own, and how far the price sits below comparable genuine items. One flag means you ask for evidence photos before paying. Two mean you pass, unless the item qualifies for a paid authenticity check and still clears your maximum buy price with the fee added.

The same checks work on OLX and Allegro Lokalnie. Platform facts below come from official pages read on 13 September 2026; other numbers are labelled examples.

How to spot fake items on Vinted before you pay, not after

A fake is stock you can't pass on. Vinted's Catalogue Rules call counterfeits "strictly forbidden", including "handmade items that resemble other brands", and say selling them "could expose sellers to civil and criminal proceedings". Its verification help page adds that sellers who repeatedly list non-genuine items get their account blocked "definitively".

So the whole buy price is at risk, not just the margin. "Buy it and claim if it's fake" is a weak plan: the claim window is 2 days from Vinted's delivery notice, and a fake you miss in that time is an item Vinted's rules forbid you to list. The buy-price maths that comes before these checks is in the product sourcing guide, and the checks themselves, gathered as a step-by-step pre-buy list with position sizing — how much to risk on an unverified item — form the authentication checklist.

Price red flags

Measure the gap between the asking price and what comparable genuine items left the market at, using the method in how to find sold comps.

Decision rules:

  • If the price is under your fast-sell price and the listing gives no reason, ask for evidence photos before paying.
  • If the item is "new" and cheaper than worn pairs of the same model, count two flags.
  • If the seller gives a reason (a stain, a missing box), check that the photos show it. A reason the photos contradict is another flag.

None of the official pages behind this article gives a price gap that marks a fake, so set your own trigger ("under my fast-sell price for this model") and apply it every time.

Photo red flags: stock images, reused photos, missing details

Vinted's Catalogue Rules say photos "cannot be replaced with stock photos, photos from ads and watermarked images".

  • Catalogue or white-background shots with no hanger, floor or hand in frame
  • The same photos in another listing or account (run a reverse image search on the first photo)
  • No close-up of the size label, care label, serial or date code, or box label
  • Soles, hardware, stitching and zip pulls shown from one angle only
  • Brand names in the title or hashtags that don't match the item, which Vinted also bans as brand spam

Ask for a missing photo with a request that can't be answered from the internet, such as "the inner size label next to a paper with today's date". A seller holding the item can do that in a minute; a refusal counts as a flag.

Seller red flags: replica farm patterns

Open the seller's profile before you study the item: a replica farm shows in the wardrobe, not in one listing.

Example listings: replica pattern vs evidence-rich listing
Weak listing
Designer trainers, new with tags, sizes 38–45
150 zł
New with tags40 listings of the same model
  • No reason for the low price
  • Same photos in every size
  • No label, box or sole close-ups
Strong listing
Designer trainers, size 42, worn
360 zł
Very goodMixed wardrobe
  • Size label, box label and soles shown
  • Creasing photographed and described
  • Receipt offered
Illustrative mock-ups with example prices, not real listings.

Signs of a replica farm:

  • The same model, new, in a run of sizes. Someone clearing a wardrobe usually has one size.
  • Near-identical listings, or the same photos on more than one account.
  • A request to pay or talk outside the marketplace, which takes the order out of the marketplace's buyer protection.

Vinted's commercial-selling help page lists "identical or similar items in several colours or sizes" and "stock or professional photos" as commercial-selling signals, not counterfeit signals. The pattern alone proves nothing; with a price flag on top, pass.

Category-specific checks: sneakers, bags, electronics

How this evidence moves the price is in used sneaker pricing and designer bag resale.

Category Ask for Buy only if
Sneakers Inner size label, box label, both soles Label and box describe the same pair; wear matches the stated condition
Bags Serial or date code, interior stamp, hardware close-ups, receipt Codes are clearly shown and documents are offered without chasing
Electronics Serial or IMEI on the settings screen, box label, device switched on Screen and box numbers match; the seller ships through the marketplace

Decision rule: if the seller won't show the one detail your category depends on, don't buy. The one-page scoring version is in how to evaluate a resale deal.

Vinted sells two optional checks to buyers. In all four markets the fee "consists of a verification service fee and shipping costs from the Seller to the hub". Item Verification checks authenticity, "not its quality or condition". Electronics Verification "doesn't include repairs, modification, or detecting any manufacturing defects" (UK page).

  • If the item qualifies and the seller won't send evidence photos, the check is the only way to buy it. Below the threshold, pass.
  • If only condition is in doubt, Item Verification won't help. Ask for condition photos.
  • If you add the check, the fee is part of the buy cost. Example: a 600 zł bag on vinted.pl with the 45 zł check must clear your maximum buy price at 645 zł, plus the buyer fee and shipping.

The process, timings and what a pass doesn't prove are on Vinted Item Verification.

eBay Authenticity Guarantee thresholds

On eBay, authentication happens when you sell, not when you buy. Eligible items above the thresholds in the table are enrolled automatically, free to the seller, with no opt-out. Inspection is generally done within 2 business days of arrival, and a failed item isn't sent on: the buyer is refunded and the item comes back to you.

That timing matters if you buy on Vinted to resell on eBay. Vinted's claim window is 2 days from its delivery notice, while eBay's authenticator sees the item only after your eBay sale. By then your Vinted order has almost certainly completed, so eBay's check tells you too late to claim.

Decision rule: if you'll resell on eBay, check before you buy as strictly as eBay will after you sell. Just below the threshold, eBay UK and eBay.de still list an optional paid check (eBay.de says the buyer pays).

What to do if you bought a fake

Use the platform's claim window, and never relist the item to get your money back: that would be selling a counterfeit.

On Vinted, a counterfeit counts as significantly not as described (UK help page 1090). You have 2 days from Vinted's notice that the parcel should have been delivered. Pressing "Everything is OK", or letting the window pass, completes the order and pays the seller. Report the problem from the order with photos of the labels and codes that don't match.

On OLX, Pakiet Ochronny covers Przesyłka OLX orders where the item doesn't match the listing's title, description or photos. You have 48 hours from pickup or delivery; Annex 8 doesn't name counterfeits, so state how the item differs from the listing. On Allegro Lokalnie, Allegro Ochrona Kupujących covers "Kup teraz" and auction purchases; its help page doesn't say how counterfeits are treated.

The seller side of Vinted claims is in Vinted returns and not-as-described claims.

Frequently asked questions

Should I pay for Vinted item verification?
Pay when three things are true: the listing qualifies, the seller's label, code and box photos still leave you unsure, and the price plus the fee stays under your maximum buy price. Skip it when the seller has already sent clear evidence. Don't buy it to settle condition either: Item Verification checks authenticity, not quality or condition, so a genuine but damaged item passes and still reaches you.
Is selling a replica illegal?
The law differs by country, so this is general information, not legal advice. Vinted's Catalogue Rules call counterfeits "strictly forbidden", including handmade items that resemble other brands, and warn that selling them could expose sellers to civil and criminal proceedings. Its verification page says repeat sellers of non-genuine items are blocked for good. Labelling an item "replica" doesn't change that. Ask a lawyer about your own case.
What is a replica farm?
Resellers use the term for a seller, or a group of accounts, listing the same branded model again and again as "new", in a run of sizes, with catalogue or reused photos and prices well under the market. Treat several usernames sharing one set of photos as one seller. It is a pattern, not proof: a shop clearing genuine stock can look similar. Combined with a price flag, pass.
Does eBay authenticate items I sell?
Eligible items above a price threshold, yes. Enrolment is automatic, free to the seller and can't be switched off; on eBay UK trainers, fashion and handbags qualify from £200. On eBay.com it starts at $100 for sneakers, $500 for handbags and $2,000 for watches. Local pickup, PO box delivery and customised items are excluded. A failed item comes back to you and the buyer is refunded.
