Designer Bag Resale: Pricing and Authentication

What moves a designer bag's price

Check these in order. A bag that fails an early line can't be rescued by a later one.

1. Model, size and material: the exact model, not "a leather shoulder bag".
2. Authenticity evidence: stamp or serial, brand receipt.
3. Condition: graded on the worst area.
4. Completeness: dust bag, box, strap, lock and keys.
5. Channel: whether the platform checks authenticity, and its fees.

Condition: corners, handles, hardware, interior

• Corners and base: scuffs, rubbed-through colour, split piping
• Handles and strap: darkening, cracks, loose stitching
• Hardware: scratches or plating loss on zips, clasps and feet
• Interior: stains, pen marks, lining tears, odour
• Shape and edges: slouching, cracked edge paint

Decision rule: grade by the worst area, not the average. A clean exterior with a stained lining belongs with stained-lining comps. Vinted's help page counts undisclosed damage as "significantly not as described", so a flaw missing from your photos can come back as a claim. Proof: receipts, cards, dust bags and serials

Papers decide which comps your bag belongs with. Vestiaire Collective's seller help asks for "the invoice, bill, or receipt (only documents from the brand can certify item authenticity)". Without them, it asks for details of origin such as location and year. Vinted says its check uses "any documents from the seller" (UK help 1147).

• If you have the brand receipt, show it with personal details covered and price against documented comps.
• If you have only a dust bag and cards, price with the bag-only group: buyers can't verify those the way they can a receipt.
• If you're buying to resell, pay a bag-only price for a bag without papers.

Authentication routes by platform

• eBay above £200 or €200 checks the bag whether you want it or not, so list only bags you'd stake the sale on. Below that, both sites list an optional £20 or €20 check.
• Vinted checks only when the buyer pays. You can't buy it for your own bag or switch it off, and a price edit can change eligibility. Other countries' thresholds and what a pass doesn't prove are on Vinted Item Verification.
• Vestiaire can cancel the sale if the bag differs from the listing. You ship within 7 days when given a label, and payment is issued the next business day after the check.

Fees at Vestiaire Collective, eBay and Vinted

Example: a £500 bag on Vestiaire costs you £60 commission plus £15 processing, leaving £425 before shipping. A UK-based private seller pays no final value fee on eBay.co.uk; a seller in Poland pays 12.8% + 30p there. Finding comparable listings for luxury items

• Exact model and size, checked in the photos, not the title
• Same material, colour and hardware colour
• Same condition grade and documentation group
• Same market and currency: no vinted.pl zł comps mixed with GBP listings

Choosing between fast sale and maximum price

Example: a bag-only piece with a €720 fair value caps at €900. Leave stretch prices to documented bags, since a Vinted buyer adding verification pays your price plus fees. Replica risk when buying to resell

Vinted's Catalogue Rules call counterfeits "strictly forbidden", and a bag that fails eBay or Vinted checks comes back to the seller.

• If the seller won't show the stamp, interior and hardware close-ups, pass.
• If the price is well below documented comps with no reason, ask for the receipt before paying.
• If the "receipt" is a screenshot with no brand name, give it no weight.

• Interior lining and brand stamp, plus serial or tag where the model has one
