Buying Broken Items to Fix and Resell
A faulty listing is only a deal if the repaired price, minus parts, time and risk, still beats the buy price.

- Start with the resale estimate after repair, then work backwards to your max buy price
- Only buy broken items you can test on pickup — never buy unseen water or board damage
- Disclosed repairs are not SNAD on Vinted; undisclosed faults can mean a return at your cost on OLX
- Account for platform limits: OLX allows only 2 free private listings for phones, laptops and consoles
Buying broken items to fix and resell can turn a low-cost listing into a profitable sale — for example, a 100 zł broken phone might sell for 500 zł after a 80 zł screen repair. But only if you calculate the repair math before you buy. This page is part of the product sourcing guide and shows you how to price a broken item backwards from the repaired resale value, which faults are worth fixing, and how to disclose repairs honestly on Vinted and OLX.
What "broken" listings really are
Sellers list broken items under several labels that mean different things:
- "Na części" (for parts) — the item has one or more faults that prevent normal use. The buyer takes it as-is.
- "Niesprawny" (non-functional) — the item does not turn on or perform its main function. The cause may be unknown.
- "Jeden znany usterka" (one known fault) — the seller identifies a specific problem, such as a cracked screen or broken charging port.
These listings are priced far below working examples because buyers typically look for working devices. That gap is your profit opportunity — but only if you can verify the fault and source the repair cheaply.
Faults worth fixing vs faults to skip
Not every broken item is worth buying. Use this checklist to filter:
- The fault is caused by a single, cheap part (screen, battery, charging port, fan)
- You can test the fault on pickup without special tools
- Parts are readily available — check local listings or Allegro for the component price
- No water damage or visible corrosion on the board
- No missing main components (camera, display, speakers)
- You have the tools and skills to do the repair
Faults to skip entirely: water damage (you cannot see the full extent until you open it), board-level faults (requiring micro-soldering), and devices sold as "untested" where you cannot verify anything before buying.
Price the repaired item before you buy
The core method is simple: work backwards from what the repaired item will sell for.
- Estimate the post-repair resale price — search completed listings or similar items on Vinted, OLX and Allegro Lokalnie. Use the fair value as your anchor.
- Subtract the parts cost — check Allegro or local listings for the replacement part. For example, a replacement screen for a popular phone model might be 80 zł.
- Subtract fees and shipping — Vinted fees are paid by the buyer, but Allegro Lokalnie charges 4.9% for electronics. OLX delivery adds another cost.
- Add a risk buffer — the repair might take longer, the part might be dead on arrival, or the listing might not sell immediately. A practical rule is to set aside 15–20% of the total as a buffer.
- What remains is your max buy price.
- Parts cost80 zł
- Fees and shipping you pay30 zł
- Risk buffer90 zł
- Your profit200 zł
- Max buy price200 zł
This calculation belongs in your sourcing notes before you message the seller. If the max buy is below their asking price, walk away — there is always another listing.

Where the listings are and the limits that bite
Three platforms host most broken electronics in Poland:
Vinted — electronics listings are common, and buyers can pay 20 zł for Electronics Verification to confirm the device powers on. There is no listing limit, but Vinted's buyer-paid fee (typically 5% + 2.90 zł in Poland) affects your net.
OLX — the private listing limit for smartphones, laptops, consoles and TVs is 2 free listings (Annex 3, effective 7 January 2026). After that, listings are paid. This makes OLX inefficient for volume selling of repaired electronics.
Allegro Lokalnie — listing is free, and the fee for electronics is 4.9% of the sale price. This is the most cost-effective platform for repaired devices, especially in the Elektronika category. For specific sourcing tips on Allegro Lokalnie, see our sourcing guide for that platform.

Describe the repair honestly
When you list the repaired item, honesty protects you from returns and disputes.
On Vinted, disclosed wear on electronics is not considered significantly not as described (SNAD). Vinted's help page explicitly states that disclosed wear is not SNAD. However, if you do not disclose a fault that existed before your repair, the buyer can open a SNAD claim. Always state what you repaired.
On OLX with Pakiet Ochronny (paid by the buyer), the protection covers function and undisclosed damage. If a buyer claims the item does not work as described and the fault was not disclosed, the buyer returns the item at your cost and receives a full refund including the Pakiet Ochronny fee.
On Allegro Lokalnie, the buyer protection works similarly — undisclosed damage that was present before you bought it can lead to a return.
The rule is simple: disclose every repair, every replaced part, and the original fault in your listing description. Take a photo of the repaired area. This is your evidence if a dispute arises.
When to walk away
Walk away from a broken listing if:
- You cannot test the fault on pickup (the device is dead and you cannot verify why)
- The repair part price is unknown or the part is rare
- The resale estimate is too thin after subtracting parts, fees and a risk buffer
- The seller will not let you inspect the item before buying
There are always more broken listings. Do not force a deal on one that does not math out.
