How to Set Buying Rules That Protect Your Margin
Write down what you buy before a listing tempts you.

- A buying rule has five fields: maximum listing price, minimum profit after fees, categories with brands and sizes, minimum condition with required photos, and minimum price confidence. A match that fails any field is a pass.
- Write the maximum as a listing price. On vinted.pl, take the usual buyer fee (5% + 2.90 zł, price list checked 13 Sept 2026) and delivery to you off your total ceiling first.
- Set minimum profit as hourly value × hours per item plus a bad-buy buffer from your own log. No figure on this page is a recommended target.
- Alerts and assisted checkout leave the pay button to you; an autobuy bot does not. That is a difference in control, not an exemption: Vinted, eBay and Grailed all restrict automated tools in their terms.

- From rule to alert to purchase, and where you stay in control
Reseller buying rules are limits you write down before a listing appears: a maximum price, a minimum profit after fees, the categories you know, the condition you accept and how much evidence a price estimate needs. When an item matches, the rule answers yes or no in seconds, before someone else pays.
Below: each rule, three example rule sets, and the line between an alert and software that buys. Platform facts are from official pages checked 13 September 2026 unless marked as press; every other number is an example, not a target.
Why rules beat instinct when listings move fast
An underpriced listing goes to whoever decides first. On the spot you anchor on the asking price; a rule anchors on your resale estimate and costs.
Example: your rule caps fleece jackets at an 82 zł listing price. One appears at 95 zł, below every similar ask. It's a pass, decided in seconds.
Decision rule: if an item only fits after you loosen a rule, pass now and review the rule later.
The wider buy decision is in the product sourcing guide.
Rule 1: maximum price
Work backwards from a conservative resale estimate, as the maximum buy price calculator does:
That is total cost; alerts show listing prices, so take off delivery and the buyer fee. On vinted.pl the Buyer Protection fee is "usually" 5% + 2.90 zł, per the price list, with the exact amount shown at checkout.
Vinted's updated Terms take effect on 5 October 2026 in Germany and France and on 8 October 2026 in the UK, the US and Poland. Press coverage (Value Added Resource, September 2026) reports the fee will be renamed "Vinted fee"; recheck the price list then and update every Vinted rule.
Rule 2: minimum profit after fees
Another reseller's figure carries their hourly value and mistakes. Build your own:
Example: an hour is worth 30 zł to you and a jacket takes 1.5 hours to find, clean, photograph, list and pack: 45 zł. Your log shows 1 buy in 10 lost 50 zł on average: 5 zł. Minimum profit: 50 zł.
"After fees" means the fees where you resell. Vinted's price lists have no seller commission line; Allegro Lokalnie's fee page lists 7.9% for Kup teraz and auctions and 4.9% in Elektronika. Resell the jacket there instead and Rule 1 drops.
Decision rule: with no purchase log yet, spread the loss of one bad buy across your next ten buys, then replace it with real figures.
Rule 3: categories, brands and sizes
Add a category only when you can name its resale estimate without searching. Start sizes wide and drop the ones your log shows sitting longest. For phones, fix model and storage: each variant has its own comparables.
Vinted's commercial-selling help pages (UK and PL give the same list) name "identical or similar items in several colours or sizes" as a signal of commercial activity. A rule buying one sneaker model across a size run, resold from a personal Vinted account, creates that pattern.
Rule 4: condition and photo quality
The condition grade is the seller's claim; the photos are the evidence. Require both:
- Condition at or above your category minimum
- Real photos of this item (Vinted's Catalogue Rules don't allow stock photos or photos from ads)
- Brand label and size or care label readable
- Every flaw in the text also shown in a photo
- Category extras: soles and inner tag for sneakers, screen switched on for phones
Decision rule: if a required photo is missing, ask once; if it hasn't arrived when you'd have to pay, pass.
Pay through the marketplace's checkout: Vinted's UK help pages count undisclosed damage and counterfeits as significantly not as described. Phone, sneaker and designer add-ons are in the pre-purchase deal checklist.
Rule 5: minimum price confidence
Rule 1 is only as good as its estimate. Confidence here means how many close comparables (same model, similar condition, recently left the market) stand behind it. Set the minimum from your own misses:
Log estimate, comparable count and actual price per flip. Your minimum is the smallest count at which misses rarely wipe out your minimum profit.
Example: estimates built on fewer than 5 comparables missed by over 50 zł in 3 of 6 flips; those built on 8 or more, in 1 of 12. You set 8.
Decision rule: below your minimum, use the fast-sell level instead of fair value in Rule 1, as in choosing between fast sale and max profit.
Three example sets of reseller buying rules
Same formulas, different inputs. Fees, service prices and limits are from official pages checked 13 September 2026; the other cells describe method, not thresholds.
| Rule | Fashion flipper (Vinted PL) | Sneaker reseller | Phone flipper (OLX, Allegro Lokalnie, Vinted) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum price | No seller commission line; subtract buyer fee and delivery | Add Item Verification (45 zł on vinted.pl) if used | 4.9% Elektronika fee on Allegro Lokalnie; Electronics Verification 20 zł on vinted.pl |
| Minimum profit | Prep time per item | Bigger buffer for fakes spotted too late | Testing time; buffer for hidden faults |
| Categories, sizes | Brands you price from memory | Named models; watch size runs | Model and storage; OLX gives private users 2 free smartphone listings (Annex 3) |
| Condition, photos | Labels, flaws in daylight | Soles, heels, inner tag, box label | Screen on, edges, damage close up |
| Price confidence | Same brand, type, condition | Same model, size, condition | Same model, storage, condition |
To turn these rules into alerts, keep the last step yours: you confirm and pay, and a tool acts only where the marketplace allows.
From rule to alert to purchase, and where you stay in control
The three ways a rule can end differ in who presses pay:
| Mode | When a listing matches | Who pays |
|---|---|---|
| Alert | You open the listing, check it and buy | You |
| Assisted checkout | Software opens the item in your own session, fills in checkout, stops before payment | You |
| Autobuy bot | Software completes the purchase | The bot, unchecked |
That is a difference in control, not an exemption. None of these terms carves out tools running in your own session:
- Vinted (UK Terms from 30 April 2026; matching PL, DE, FR clauses): users must not "use any kind of external software tools (including but not limited to: bots, scraping programs …) … unless such a use is authorised, offered or in any other way allowed by us". Press reports no change in the UK and US update; reread it after 8 October.
- eBay (US User Agreement): bans automated means "including, without limitation buy-for-me agents, LLM-driven bots, or any end-to-end flow that attempts to place orders without human review", except with eBay's prior express permission.
- Grailed (Terms of Service): bans automated offer, purchase or checkout tools "without direct human initiation and review of each transaction".
- OLX: a text search of the Terms effective 27 April 2026 found no explicit bot clause. That is not a permission.
Marketplace automation rules sets out each clause in full; assisted checkout vs autobuy bots compares the modes. For notifications only, use the marketplaces' own new listing alerts.
Before you press pay, in any mode:
- Listing price still at or below the rule's maximum
- Buyer fee and delivery at checkout fit inside your Rule 1 total
- You can open and inspect the parcel the day it arrives
