Flipping Items from Facebook Marketplace: Pickup, Checks and Margin

Facebook Marketplace is a buying ground for many resellers. How to inspect at pickup, avoid scams and check the price gap after fees on the platform where you sell.

Key takeaways
  • Use Facebook Marketplace as a buying channel only — list your flips on Vinted, OLX or Allegro Lokalnie where you have protection and an existing buyer base.
  • Message sellers with specific questions before you travel: serial number, photos of faults, reason for selling. Short, direct messages get answers.
  • At pickup, test everything on the spot in a public place. Photograph the item and keep the chat screenshot as your proof of purchase.
  • Facebook's 10% fee and seller protection apply only to US shipped orders — no Poland-specific rules are published.
  • Factor in the resale platform's fee before you buy: Vinted buyer pays 5% + 2.90 zł, OLX buyer pays Pakiet Ochronny (amount varies), Allegro Lokalnie takes 7.9% (or 4.9% in electronics).

Facebook Marketplace works differently from the platforms where you will resell. It is a local-pickup market with no built-in buyer protection for cash transactions — you are buying from individuals who want items gone, often quickly and cheaply. The opportunity is in the gap between what Facebook sellers price and what the same item fetches on Vinted, OLX or Allegro Lokalnie.

This page covers how to find deals, check items safely, avoid buyer-side scams, and calculate whether the math works after the fees on the platform where you will sell. It is part of the product sourcing guide — the pillar page for resellers who buy stock to resell.

Why resellers buy on Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace reaches people who do not use dedicated resale apps. They are clearing out garages, upgrading gadgets, or simply want cash for items they no longer need. This creates lower prices than you will find on Vinted or OLX, where professional resellers compete.

The catch: Facebook offers no seller fees for local pickup in Poland, but also no buyer protection for cash transactions. You are dealing face-to-face with no intermediary. That means you carry the risk — and the reward.

The resell destination matters from the start. For example, say you find a 200 zł speaker on Facebook — on Allegro Lokalnie that might sell for around 300 zł after the 7.9% fee, or around 320 zł on Vinted after the buyer-paid fee. Calculate the gap before you travel.

If you are also sourcing from stores, retail arbitrage works alongside Facebook buys.

Messaging sellers: questions that work

Short, direct messages get responses. Facebook sellers are not waiting for a resale pro — they want a quick yes or no.

Ask these three things before you commit to a pickup:

  • Serial or model number. Verify it matches the listing. Electronics without a serial are harder to resell and harder to verify if stolen.
  • Photos of any faults. If they say "works perfectly," ask for a photo of the screen on, the ports, the back. Any reluctance is a signal.
  • Reason for selling. "Upgrading" or "not using it" is normal. "Found it in storage" warrants extra caution — it may have been sitting dead for years.

Send one message, wait a few hours. Pushy resellers who flood inboxes look like bots and get ignored.

Example message (copy if you like):

"Hi, is this still available? Can you send a photo of [screen/ports/serial]? Thanks."

Pickup inspection routine

Meet in a well-lit public place — a supermarket car park, a busy street, a petrol station. Never go to a private address alone.

Pickup checklist
  1. 1Message questionsSerial, fault photos, reason for selling
  2. 2Agree on public meetingSupermarket car park, daytime
  3. 3Test on the spotPower on, check all functions, inspect serial
  4. 4Check for stolen-goods red flagsNo serial, heavily discounted popular items, seller is nervous
  5. 5Pay only after checks passCash or transfer after you're satisfied
  6. 6Photograph item and chatYour receipt if anything goes wrong
Work through each step before you hand over money.

Test electronics before you pay. Power it on, run through basic functions, check the screen for dead pixels, test ports and buttons. If it is a phone or tablet, ask for the PIN to verify it is not iCloud/FRP locked.

Red flags that an item may be stolen: no serial number, especially on popular items like iPhones, gaming consoles or power tools; a price too far below market; the seller cannot answer basic questions about the item.

Buyer-side scams to recognise

Facebook Marketplace scams target buyers, not sellers, but the patterns are worth knowing:

  • Deposit requests before viewing. A seller who asks for a deposit to "hold" the item before you have seen it is a classic scam signal. No legitimate seller needs a deposit for a local pickup.
  • Fake payment or courier links. The seller sends a link that looks like a payment confirmation or shipping tracker. The link is fake. Never click payment links on Facebook — complete transactions in person or not at all.
  • Switch at pickup. The item works in the seller's hands, but something is swapped in the bag before you leave. Test everything before you walk away.

These scams are not unique to Facebook, but the lack of a platform intermediary means you have zero recourse if something goes wrong. The same scam smarts from OLX scams for sellers apply here: if anything feels off, walk away.

The broader topic of buying on one platform and selling on another is marketplace arbitrage. This page focuses on Facebook as the buying source specifically.

Facebook fees and protection: what is and is not confirmed

Facebook publishes a selling fee of 10% per transaction with a minimum of $0.80 for US shipped orders. This fee applies to the total amount including shipping and taxes. Seller Protection, which covers eligible disputes, is currently only available in the US.

These rules are for US shipped orders only. Whether Facebook charges any fee for local pickup in Poland, and whether any seller protection exists in Europe, is not published anywhere Facebook makes public. The US numbers are the only official numbers available, and they may not apply to your market.

For Poland specifically: treat Facebook as a fee-free platform for local pickup, but do not assume it. If you plan to ship (not applicable to most flips), check Facebook's current rules for Poland before you rely on them.

The price-gap maths: resale price minus platform fees

Once you have the item, you list it where buyers already are. The fees differ by platform:

Platform Who pays the fee Typical fee
Vinted (Poland) Buyer 5% + 2.90 zł
OLX (with Pakiet Ochronny) Buyer Varies, shown at checkout
Allegro Lokalnie Seller 7.9% (4.9% electronics)
Allegro Lokalnie (local pickup) Seller 0 zł

The buyer-paid fee on Vinted and OLX comes out of what the buyer pays — your payout is the listed price minus any fee the platform charges the seller (Allegro Lokalnie) or minus nothing (Vinted and OLX with buyer-paid protection).

Waterfall example: say you buy a speaker for 300 zł, spend 20 zł on travel, and resell it on Allegro Lokalnie with Kup Teraz at 520 zł.

Flip example: 300 zł buy, 520 zł sell
Sale price520 zł
  • Buy price300 zł
  • Travel20 zł
  • Allegro Lokalnie fee (7.9%)41 zł
  • Packaging8 zł
  • Net profit151 zł

In this illustrative example, the 151 zł profit depends on the Allegro Lokalnie fee (7.9%) being correct at the time of sale. Check the fee calculator for current rates before you price.

If you resell on Vinted, the buyer pays the fee, so your payout is closer to the full listing price — but Vinted sales have to be shipped and follow Vinted's own buyer protection rules.

Reselling rules on the other side

Each resale platform has its own listing rules. The key ones for a Facebook flip:

  • OLX: the item must be in your possession at the time of listing. You cannot list something you have not collected yet. This is in the OLX Terms and gets enforced — listing before you have the item can result in removal.
  • Vinted: treats bulk-bought low-value goods and identical items in several sizes as signals of commercial activity. Individual accounts are for personal resale. If you scale up, you may need a Pro account or a business registration.
  • Allegro Lokalnie: local pickup listings have zero seller fee. Use this for items where you can hand over in person — you keep the full price. The 7.9% (or 4.9% in electronics) commission applies to Kup teraz and auction sales, not to local pickup listings.

Pack carefully: bubble wrap, box, tape — buyer expects a safe delivery

If you list before you own the item — do not. The platform will remove it, and repeat violations affect your account standing.

Next steps

Check what the item is worth on the platforms where you will sell before you agree to a pickup. Scout's price ladder on Vinted, OLX and Allegro Lokalnie shows fair value, fast-sell price and market ask — so you know whether the Facebook price leaves room for profit after fees.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to buy on Facebook Marketplace to resell?
Local cash pickups carry no buyer protection from Facebook. Meet in a well-lit public place, test the item before paying, and walk away if the seller avoids your questions or pressures for a deposit. The same smarts you use on OLX or Vinted apply here: if a deal reads as too good to be true, it probably is.
Does Facebook charge fees on local pickup sales?
Facebook's published fee of 10% (minimum $0.80) applies only to US shipped orders. Whether local pickup deals in Poland carry any fee is not publicly documented — Facebook does not publish Poland-specific rules. Treat the US numbers as a reference, not a fact about your market.
What should I check when collecting an item from a Facebook seller?
Ask for the serial or model number before you travel, request photos of any faults, and agree on a public meeting spot. At pickup, test electronics on the spot, check the serial matches what was promised, and verify the item matches the description. Photograph the item and keep the chat screenshot as your receipt. Only pay after you've checked everything.
Can I resell a Facebook Marketplace item on OLX straight away?
Yes, but only after you have the item in your possession. OLX's Terms require the item to be in your possession at the time of listing. List it on Vinted, OLX or Allegro Lokalnie only after the pickup — listing before you own it violates the platform rules and can get your listing removed.
