Marketplace Arbitrage: Profiting From Price Gaps Between Platforms

Why price gaps exist between marketplaces

No marketplace publishes cross-platform price data, and we haven't measured any. Gaps come from structure you can check yourself:

• Who pays the fee. A buyer-paid fee sits on top of the ask. A seller who wants buyers to see the same total as on a commission platform has to type a lower price.
• Pickup versus parcels. A local OLX listing reaches buyers within travelling distance; a shipped listing reaches the whole country.
• Seller knowledge. Someone clearing a flat may price from memory; a specialist prices from comparables.

Decision rule: if you can't name which of these causes a gap, treat it as noise until comparables prove otherwise.

Fee asymmetry: seller-free vs commission platforms

A buyer fee raises your cost when you buy there and caps your ask when you sell there.

Vinted's updated Terms take effect on 8 October 2026 in Poland (5 October in Germany and France), and press coverage reports the buyer fee is being renamed "Vinted fee", so recheck the price list then. Decision rule: on a commission platform, compare the net payout with your buy-side total, never the asking price.

Audience asymmetry: category fit per platform

The pages we read publish no buyer numbers by category, so judge fit by the rules:

• Vinted is built around parcels, but personal accounts may not list items intended for commercial sale. Signals include bulk-bought goods and identical items in several sizes.
• OLX lets buyers collect, which suits bulky items, but a private user gets 1 free listing per 60 days in most furniture subcategories and 2 for smartphones, laptops, consoles and TVs.
• Allegro Lokalnie lets business accounts buy but not sell.

How to check whether a gap is real

• Same model, size and condition on both sides
• Sell-side price from comparable items that left the market, not live asks
• Several comparables, with the dates you saw them
• Buyer fee read at checkout, not estimated
• Your right to sell there checked: account type, category limits
• A minimum profit set before you look, from your own hourly value

Costs that close the gap: shipping, time, returns

• Shipping. Vinted's UK help page says the buyer pays for shipping. An Allegro Paczkomaty InPost parcel from Lokalnie is 10.95 zł, your cost if you offer free delivery.
• Time. Collecting, cleaning, photos, messages, posting: price it per hour.
• Returns. An accepted OLX Pakiet Ochronny claim is returned at the seller's cost. eBay UK says a private seller who excludes returns must still deliver the item as described.
• Two copies. eBay's US policy allows one fixed price listing of an identical item per seller at a time; OLX allows one listing per item in free and limited categories. Delete the other copy the moment one sells.

Rules that apply: eBay's two documents, possession and duplicates

• eBay User Agreement §8.2 binds you as a user. The US version (effective 28 June 2026 for existing users) bans "any automated means (including, without limitation buy-for-me agents, LLM-driven bots, or any end-to-end flow that attempts to place orders without human review)" to access eBay, "except with the prior express permission of eBay".
• The API License Agreement binds developers using eBay's API. An app may not "promote or engage in seller arbitrage", for example "automatically ordering sold items from other third-party sites".
• OLX: the item must be in your possession, so listing first and buying after a sale breaks the Terms.
• Vinted: the Terms ban external tools such as bots and scraping programs "unless such a use is authorised, offered or in any other way allowed by us".

A worked example: OLX pickup, two places to sell

The higher ask lost. Before picking Vinted, though, remember its commercial-selling rule for personal accounts.
