Retail Arbitrage in Europe: Buying Clearance Stock to Resell
Discount racks and outlet sales can feed a resale business, but new, tagged items in multiples are exactly what platforms read as commercial selling.

- Retail arbitrage means buying discounted items in physical stores to resell online — different from marketplace arbitrage (platform to platform).
- Vinted treats new tagged items in multiples as commercial activity; personal accounts can be restricted or banned for this.
- Allegro Lokalnie charges 7.9% (4.9% in electronics) and does not allow business accounts to sell.
- Unregistered activity in Poland is capped at 10,813.50 zł per quarter — above that you may need to register a business.
- Always calculate margin after fees before buying: platform fee + shipping + your time cost often kills the deal.
Retail arbitrage means buying discounted items in physical stores — clearance sections, end-of-season sales, outlet stores — and reselling them on online marketplaces. It's different from marketplace arbitrage, where you buy low on one platform and list higher on another. With retail arbitrage you find the price gap in a shop, not in search results.
This page covers whether you can legally resell clearance stock in Poland and the EU, how platform rules affect your choice of where to sell, and the maths that determine whether a clearance deal is worth pursuing.
For a broader overview of where resellers source stock, see the product sourcing guide. For buying locally, see Facebook Marketplace flipping.
For understanding the private vs business seller distinction, see private vs business seller. This page assumes you're buying discounted new items from stores — not sourcing from other resellers or liquidation pallets.
What retail arbitrage is
Retail arbitrage starts in a physical store. For example, you spot a jacket reduced from 180 zł to 120 zł, or a pair of trainers at 40% off, or unsold summer stock cleared in January. You buy a few units, list them on Vinted, OLX or Allegro Lokalnie, and pocket the difference after fees.
The key difference from marketplace arbitrage is where the opportunity lives. Marketplace arbitrage relies on searching listings across platforms for price mismatches. Retail arbitrage relies on walking stores, checking clearance sections, and knowing which items hold value on resale platforms. Both require understanding fees and demand, but the sourcing method is completely different.
Is reselling clearance stock allowed
There's no law in Poland that prohibits reselling items you legally purchased. You own the goods, you can sell them. However, three practical limits apply:
- Store policies. Individual retailers may restrict how many items you can buy or prohibit resale entirely. Many stores don't publish this, so ask staff or check the receipt for any restrictions.
- Platform rules. Vinted, OLX and Allegro Lokalnie each have rules about commercial sellers, covered next.
- Tax obligations. If you're selling regularly as a business, different rules apply than for occasional personal sales.
Store terms and brand rules on reselling new goods differ from shop to shop. Check each store's policy and any brand-specific rules before buying stock.
The commercial-seller line on Vinted, OLX and Allegro Lokalnie
Each platform treats commercial activity differently, and your choice of platform may be limited by how you source.
Vinted allows only personal accounts in Poland. Vinted Pro is not available in Poland. Their help page lists signals that trigger commercial-activity detection: a high number of completed orders, high revenue, many new or tagged items, identical items in several sizes or colours, stock or professional photos, and bulk-bought or dropshipped low-value goods. If you buy multiple identical clearance items and list them as new with tags, several of these signals apply at once. Your listings may be hidden or your account restricted.
OLX allows both private and business listings. Business listings in some categories (like fashion) require paid packages, and certain categories have zero free quota for business users. The platform distinguishes between consumers and business users — you declare your status when you post.
Allegro Lokalnie cannot be used by business accounts at all — only regular (private) accounts can sell. The fee is 7.9% on "Kup teraz" and auction listings, or 4.9% in electronics. This is higher than Vinted's buyer-paid fee but the seller knows exactly what they pay.
If you're buying identical clearance items in bulk, Vinted is not a safe choice. OLX or Allegro Lokalnie are better fits for this model.
Receipts, records and tax
Keep every receipt. It proves what you paid and where the item came from — important if a buyer questions authenticity, and essential if you sell as a business and need to report costs.
In Poland, selling private items you've held for more than six months is not subject to income tax. However, selling items you specifically bought to resell usually counts as business activity, regardless of how long you held them. The tax office looks at whether the activity is organized, continuous and profit-oriented. Buying clearance stock with the intent to resell typically points to business activity.
If your resale revenue stays below 10,813.50 zł per quarter (the 2026 limit for działalność nierejestrowana, or unregistered business), you can operate without formal registration. Above that, you generally need to register. Buyers purchasing from you as an unregistered business still keep consumer rights, including the 14-day withdrawal right for distance sales.

Margin after fees: the maths that kills most clearance flips
The appeal of retail arbitrage is buying at 50% off and selling at full price. The reality is that platform fees, shipping and packaging often leave little or nothing.
Here's an illustrative example on Allegro Lokalnie:
- Buy price120 zł
- Allegro Lokalnie fee (7.9%)17 zł
- Packaging4 zł
- Shipping label (buyer pays most)0 zł
- Estimated profit79 zł
In this illustrative scenario you keep 79 zł profit per jacket. Subtract your time for sourcing, listing and shipping, and the hourly rate drops quickly. On Vinted, the buyer pays the fee, so your net is higher per listing but the platform takes a cut that varies by price and order type. On OLX, fees depend on whether you use promoted listings or shipping integrations.
Use the marketplace fee calculator to model specific scenarios before committing to stock.
Picking items that survive the maths
Not every clearance deal is worth pursuing. Before buying, check:
- Resale demand. Search the item on Vinted, OLX and Allegro Lokalnie. Are similar items listed? At what price? How long have they been sitting? If dozens of listings exist at your target price, the market may be saturated.
- Size and seasonality. Clearance sections are often last-season sizes. Summer jackets in January sell slowly. Kids' clothes in sizes that run out quickly are better.
- Condition wording for new items. List deadstock items as "new with tags" or "new, unused" — don't claim "brand new" if the item was display stock. See our deadstock glossary for what these terms mean on marketplaces.
- Your buy price. Apply the fee math backwards. If you want 50 zł profit after fees, what's the maximum you can pay given the platform fee and expected shipping cost?
If the numbers don't work at the clearance price, skip it. Retail arbitrage only works when the buy price leaves enough margin after every cost.
A small test before you scale
Don't load up on clearance stock based on a single visit. Buy 2–3 units of one item type, list them, and track how long they take to sell. A week? Two weeks? A month? This tells you whether the demand assumption was right and whether the margin holds after real fees and shipping.
Watch how quickly comparable items disappear from the market. If similar listings are consistently priced above yours and still sit for weeks, the demand may be weaker than you expected. If they sell within days, you can consider buying more — but always recalculate the margin at the quantity you're planning.
- Buy 2–3 units of one item type
- List with clear photos and accurate description
- Track days to sell at your price point
- Recalculate margin after the first sale
- Only scale if the unit economics hold

This test keeps your risk low while you learn what works. Retail arbitrage rewards patience and number-crunching, not impulse buys at the checkout.
