What Does Deadstock Mean?
One word, two opposite meanings: a premium condition in sneakers and fashion, and a problem in your inventory. How to use it without misleading buyers.

- Deadstock (one word) = condition: never worn, original packaging, tags intact.
- Dead stock (two words) = inventory term: stock that never sold and is written off.
- DS and VNDS are community shorthand with no official platform definition — be honest in your description.
- Selling lots of deadstock on a personal Vinted account can trigger commercial-activity flags.
- Fakes often carry fake deadstock claims; describe your item honestly to avoid disputes.
Deadstock describes an item that was never worn or used and remains in its original condition — typically with tags still attached, in the original box, with tissue paper and any extras like spare laces. The term comes from sneaker and streetwear culture, where collectors value the complete package the way it left the factory.
The two-word version, dead stock, means something completely different in retail: inventory that was purchased or produced but never sold and is now written off or liquidated.

Deadstock vs dead stock
| Deadstock (one word) | Dead stock (two words) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it describes | Condition of a single item | Inventory that never sold |
| Who uses it | Sneaker and streetwear community | Retail and warehouse operations |
| Effect on price | Higher value — complete original package commands a premium | Lower value — clearance or liquidation price |
| What to do with it | List with photos of the box and tags | See the dead stock reselling guide for liquidation options |

How deadstock condition affects price
The price of a deadstock item should be compared against other items in the same condition: other deadstock pairs, not worn ones. A pair worn once — even if cleaned — sits in a lower price tier.
| Deadstock | Worn once / VNDS | Used with visible wear | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original box, tags, tissue, laces | Box may be damaged, no tags | No box, tags missing or removed | |
| Full retail price or higher | Worn once pricing 10–30% below retail | Used pricing 30–60% below retail | |
| Comparable set: other deadstock listings | Comparable set: other worn pairs | Comparable set: other used pairs |
The comparable set matters. If you price deadstock against used pairs, you are leaving money on the table. If you price worn pairs as deadstock, buyers will dispute the listing or flag it.

Listing wording: when you can call something deadstock
You can call an item deadstock when you can prove it:
- Tags still attached — price tags, brand tags, size tags
- Original box — not a shipping box, the retail box
- No wear — never worn, never used, insole paper still inside
- Extras present — spare laces, dust bags, authenticity cards, original tissue
For vintage deadstock (items that are deadstock and also vintage — at least 20 years old on Etsy's definition), you need to explain how you know the item's age and origin. Etsy's vintage policy may ask sellers to document this.
Platform condition labels are separate from the deadstock claim. Vinted, OLX and Allegro Lokalnie each have their own condition dropdowns. Pick the platform's own option honestly, then add your deadstock description in the free-text field.
Deadstock on personal accounts: commercial signals
Vinted lists several signals that may indicate commercial activity on an individual account: many new or tagged items, identical items in several sizes or colours, high order volume, and professional photos. If you list many deadstock pairs — especially the same model in multiple sizes — your account may be flagged as commercial. Vinted Pro is not available in Poland, so commercial selling on a personal Vinted account in Poland risks hidden listings or a ban.
This matters if you source deadstock from retail clearances or liquidation. See retail arbitrage in Europe for how to source new inventory legally, and card grading for another collector condition term used in a different market.
