How to Sell a Used Apple Watch (and Other Smartwatches)
A watch that is still tied to the old owner's account is a paperweight. Unlock first, then list the details buyers filter by.

- Unpair the watch and remove Activation Lock before you photograph or list it — Apple's own page says a locked watch asks the buyer for the previous owner's password during setup, which stalls or kills a sale.
- On a cellular model, remove the cellular plan as part of unpairing; the buyer should still confirm with you afterwards, since carrier-side details aren't covered by Apple's page.
- Comparables only match when generation, case size, material and connectivity (GPS or GPS + Cellular) all match — mixing these up in a listing invites offers priced for a different watch.
- Vinted's optional Electronics Verification costs 20 zł, paid by the buyer, on top of the usual buyer fee; price each material against its own comparable listings rather than applying a rule-of-thumb discount.
- For other brands — Garmin, Samsung and others — follow that maker's own reset or unlink page rather than Apple's steps; they're different products with different processes.
Selling a used Apple Watch starts before you write the listing: unpairing it and turning off Activation Lock, because a watch that still asks a buyer for your Apple Account password during setup isn't really sellable yet. This guide covers that step, the cellular plan on connected models, identifying case size and material correctly, what to check on the battery and screen, straps and accessories, and pricing against the right comparables, with iPhones and iPads covered in their own guides and the full method for other categories in the resale category guides.
Unpair and remove Activation Lock
Apple's own instructions for preparing a watch to sell, published 14 November 2025, are short and specific: unpair the watch from the iPhone it's connected to using the Watch app, and while doing that, enter your Apple Account password to turn off Activation Lock. Do this before you take listing photos — a watch mid-setup, still showing a pairing screen, doesn't photograph as confidently as one that's clean and ready to go.

- 1Back upThe Watch app backs up automatically when you unpair
- 2Unpair in the Watch appOn the paired iPhone, choose to unpair the watch
- 3Remove the cellular planCellular models only — do this in the same unpairing step
- 4Enter your Apple Account passwordThis is what turns off Activation Lock
- 5Buyer sets up the watchIf it asks for the previous owner's password, Activation Lock is still on — stop and contact the seller
If you're the buyer and setup asks for a password you don't recognise, that's the previous owner's Apple Account, not yours, and Apple's guidance is that only the seller can clear it — ask them to unpair and remove the lock properly rather than trying to work around the prompt.
Cellular models: remove the plan
Apple's instructions specifically call out removing the cellular plan as part of the unpairing process on a cellular-capable watch — it isn't automatic just because you unpaired the device. As a buyer, it's worth confirming with the seller afterwards that this step was actually done; if anything looks unresolved, the buyer's own carrier is the right place to check.
Identify case size, material and model
Apple's own identify-your-Apple-Watch page is the reliable source for exact model details — the case size is engraved on the case back, and the model and material are listed in Settings → General → About. If you're unsure, check that page directly. What matters for a listing is stating clearly: the case size in millimetres, the case material (aluminium, stainless steel or titanium), and whether it's GPS or GPS + Cellular. Each of those is a separate axis a buyer filters on, and a listing missing any of them reads as less trustworthy than one that states all three plainly.
A photo of the case back next to the strap and box, taken in decent light, does more work here than a paragraph of description — a buyer comparing your listing against several others can confirm size and material at a glance instead of re-reading the text to check what you meant.
Battery and screen: what to check and disclose
Check the screen for cracks and deep scratches under angled light, and note the general battery behaviour you've observed — how it holds up through a normal day, whether it drops unusually fast. Rather than quoting a specific percentage from the battery-health readout (which is in Settings → Battery on the watch), describe what you've actually observed and disclose it plainly.
Vinted's UK help page on items that are significantly not as described draws a clear line: undisclosed damage or functionality problems count against you, but wear you've disclosed up front doesn't. A scratched screen mentioned in the listing is just a condition detail; the same scratch found by the buyer after the sale is a dispute.
Straps, charger and box

Photograph every strap, the charging puck and the box if you still have them, and decide whether a spare strap travels with the watch or gets its own listing. There's no confirmed data on how much a bundled strap adds to the sale price, so treat this as a judgement call rather than a formula: a single common strap probably belongs with the watch, while several spares — especially in different colours or materials — might be worth more listed on their own to someone who already owns a matching watch.
Pricing a watch against comparable listings
Comparables only count when generation, case size, material and connectivity all match — say a 41mm aluminium GPS model and a 45mm titanium GPS + Cellular model: they're different listings even if they're the same brand and look similar in a thumbnail. Get those four details right first, then let condition set the price within that comparable group. The same comparable-matching logic applies to reselling an iPad and to reselling an iPhone: storage, generation and condition each split a listing into its own comparable group before price enters the picture.
reva's Scout module tracks listings that left the market on Vinted, OLX and Allegro Lokalnie, so once you've matched generation, size, material and connectivity, you can see a five-level price ladder for that exact comparable group instead of guessing at a number.
- A buyer can't tell what they're bidding on, so the price reads as a guess and invites a lowball message.
- Every filter a comparable-shopping buyer uses is answered before they have to ask.
At the time of writing (September 2026), Vinted's optional Electronics Verification costs 20 zł, paid by the buyer on top of the usual Buyer Protection fee, and it's worth mentioning if you're confident in the watch's condition; Vinted's Polish price list also carries updated Terms taking effect 8 October 2026, worth a check if you're listing close to that date. Allegro Lokalnie's electronics rate is 4.9% on a completed Kup teraz sale or auction, lower than its standard 7.9%, with local listings free to post — though that fee only applies once the buyer pays within 72 hours or fills in the delivery form.
Other smartwatches: check the maker's own page
Garmin, Samsung and other makers each have their own reset or account-unlink process. Samsung Galaxy watches run Wear OS and need a factory reset through Settings → General → Reset. Garmin devices use Garmin Express or a reset through Settings → System → Reset. Follow the maker's own support page for the model you're selling rather than assuming Apple's process transfers across. The listing principles above (state size, connectivity and material; disclose screen and battery condition; decide on straps) apply just as well regardless of brand, and a buyer comparing a non-Apple smartwatch against others will still be filtering on the same handful of details.
If you're clearing out other electronics alongside the watch, reselling headphones covers a similar condition-and-accessories checklist, and mechanical watches have their own separate method in the watch resale guide rather than repeated here.
Vinted's optional verification services are covered in full detail on their own page, including the categories that are actually confirmed to be eligible.
