How to Sell a Used Laptop (and Resell One You Bought)
Account locks, battery cycles, the exact spec and the keyboard layout: the four things that decide whether a laptop sale sticks.

- Back up, then wipe and unlink the laptop from iCloud or your Microsoft account before you list it — a laptop still tied to an account is a return waiting to happen.
- A MacBook's cycle count sits in System Information under Power > Battery Information; Apple rates most modern models to 1000 cycles with 80% capacity retained at that point.
- OLX gives private sellers only 2 free listings in laptops; Allegro Lokalnie charges 4.9% on Kup teraz and auction listings in Elektronika but 0 zł for local pickup listings; Vinted's Electronics Verification costs the buyer 20 zł.
- No official source publishes a price discount for a UK keyboard layout in Poland — compare only same-layout listings and say the layout in the title.
- Photograph the spec screen and the cycle count before you erase the drive: both disappear the moment the account is gone.
- Before anything: wipe the drive and remove it from your accounts
- Battery: cycle count and what it tells a buyer
- Find the exact spec, not just the model name
- Keyboard layout, charger and other price details
- Pricing a laptop against comparable listings
- OLX, Allegro Lokalnie or Vinted for a laptop
- Handover checklist
Wipe it, unlink it from your account, then price it by exact spec — that order sells a used laptop without a dispute. This guide covers the account and disk steps for Mac and Windows, the two numbers a buyer actually checks (spec and battery cycles), and where to list in Poland. It sits inside the wider category resale guides series; if you're buying a laptop to flip rather than selling your own, the pre-purchase tests are in testing used electronics before you buy.
Before anything: wipe the drive and remove it from your accounts
Do this before you photograph the laptop, not after — a signed-in account or a locked disk kills a sale mid-conversation.
On a Mac with Apple silicon or a T2 chip, running macOS Monterey or later: back up first, then use Erase All Content and Settings. It signs you out of iCloud and iMessage, unpairs Bluetooth accessories and wipes the disk in one pass. On older Macs, Apple's own steps are: sign out of iCloud and iMessage separately, unpair Bluetooth accessories, then boot into macOS Recovery, erase the disk with Disk Utility and reinstall macOS; on Intel Macs, also reset NVRAM.
On Windows: back up with Windows Backup, then go to Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC. That resets the machine, but it does not remove it from your Microsoft account — for that, sign in separately at account.microsoft.com/devices, find the laptop and choose "I'm ready to remove this device," then unlink it so it stops counting toward your Microsoft Store device limit.
- 1Back up your filesExternal drive or cloud, before you touch any setting
- 2Erase the driveMac: Erase All Content and Settings (Apple silicon/T2, macOS Monterey+) or Disk Utility from Recovery on older Macs; Windows: Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC
- 3Sign out and remove the deviceMac: sign out of iCloud and iMessage, unpair Bluetooth; Windows: remove and unlink the device at account.microsoft.com/devices
- 4Check it boots to first setupConfirms the account is actually gone before a buyer sees it
- 5Photograph the spec screen and cycle countDo this before erasing — both numbers disappear with the account
Battery: cycle count and what it tells a buyer

A cycle count is the closest thing a laptop has to an odometer reading, and Mac makes it easy to check. Hold Option and click the Apple menu, then open System Information > Hardware > Power and read Cycle Count under Battery Information. Apple states that most modern Mac laptops have a maximum cycle count of 1000, and the battery "is designed to retain up to 80% of its original charge capacity at its maximum cycle count." Some 2008–2009 MacBooks are rated to 500 cycles, and older models to 300.
Put the number in the listing as a fact, not a feeling: for example, write "312 cycles" in the spec line — that tells a buyer something; "battery still great" tells them nothing. For Windows we're not giving a command here — no official Microsoft page we opened names a battery-cycle check, so don't invent one; describe the battery honestly (runtime, any swelling, whether it holds a charge unplugged) instead.
Find the exact spec, not just the model name
"13-inch laptop" is not a listing; for example, "13-inch, quad-core, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, 2560×1600" is. Buyers search and compare on CPU, RAM, storage size, screen size and resolution, and the production year, not the marketing name alone. Open the laptop's own system information screen and copy those figures exactly — don't round storage up or guess RAM from memory.
Two laptops with the same model name can carry different CPUs or storage depending on the year and configuration they were built with, which is exactly why the exact spec, not the model name, is what a comparable listing needs to match.
Keyboard layout, charger and other price details

Layout is easy to overlook, but it changes which listings are actually comparable to yours: a UK, US or PL keyboard is a different physical product to a Polish buyer — there's no published figure for how much a non-PL layout discounts a price, so don't quote one. Instead, state the layout plainly in the title and photograph the keys, and when you price your own laptop, compare it only against listings with the same layout.
The rest of the "extras" line is straightforward: the original charger (a laptop sold without one reads as incomplete), the box if you kept it, and any visible wear on the lid, hinge or trackpad disclosed up front. None of these move the price as much as spec and layout, but leaving them out invites a lowball offer to cover the unknown.
Pricing a laptop against comparable listings
A comparable listing matches on four things at once: exact spec, keyboard layout, condition band, and — for a Mac — the cycle count band. Drop any one of them and you're pricing a different laptop. Say, for example, a 13-inch ultrabook with 16 GB/512 GB, a PL keyboard and under 300 cycles sells for a different price than the same model with a US keyboard or double the cycles, even if both look identical in a photo — see how condition changes the price for the general method behind condition bands.
OLX, Allegro Lokalnie or Vinted for a laptop
The three channels treat laptops differently, at the time of writing (September 2026). OLX's Annex 3 gives private sellers only 2 free listings in laptops, smartphones, consoles and TVs, and business accounts get 0 free listings in that group. On Allegro Lokalnie, Elektronika listings cost 4.9% on Kup teraz and auction sales, while a local-pickup listing is 0 zł. On Vinted Poland, selling is free for individuals, and the buyer can add optional Electronics Verification for 20 zł, paid on top of the price; disclosed wear is not treated as Significantly Not as Described on Vinted's UK help page, but functionality that doesn't match the listing is.
Run your own numbers through the marketplace fee calculator before you pick a channel, and see Allegro Lokalnie's fee breakdown if electronics are a regular category for you.
Handover checklist
- Backed up, then erased (Erase All Content and Settings, or Reset this PC)
- Signed out of iCloud/iMessage, or removed and unlinked at account.microsoft.com/devices
- Confirmed it boots to first setup, not your desktop
- Original charger included and photographed
- Cycle count (Mac) or honest battery description (Windows) stated in the listing
- Photo of the spec screen taken before erasing
- Keyboard layout stated in the title
- Meeting in person, or shipping with the marketplace's own delivery/protection option
Selling one laptop the right way is most of the method for selling an iPad or a graphics card pulled from a desktop — the account-removal step differs by device, but exact spec, condition band and disclosed wear decide the price everywhere. Work through the checklist in order before you photograph anything: a laptop that still shows a personal desktop or a missing charger in the listing photos costs you buyer trust before a single message arrives, and it's far easier to fix before the ad goes live than after someone has already asked about it.
