How to Find a Reselling Niche
Pick a niche with evidence from your own market, not a US 'best things to flip' list.

- Research a niche by tracking three to five candidates the same way for two weeks: the share of new comparable listings gone by day 14, the last prices of those exits, and the spread of live asks.
- Price spread = (upper-quarter ask − lower-quarter ask) ÷ median ask. A tight spread lets you price a niche from memory; a wide one means researching every item.
- Category rules can decide a niche before any score does: OLX's Annex 3 (effective 7 January 2026) gives private users 2 free listings for smartphones, laptops, consoles and TVs.
- Apply gates first (cash per item, listing rules, your profit floor), then rank the survivors against each other instead of against a quoted benchmark.
- A listing that disappeared left the market; it did not necessarily sell. Every rate you record is an estimate, so write the cohort size next to it.

To find a reselling niche, shortlist three to five brands or categories you can source repeatedly, then track comparable listings for each for two weeks on the marketplace where you'll sell. Record how many leave the market, how widely asking prices spread and how crowded the search is. Add each category's fees and listing rules, rank the candidates against each other, and specialise in the winner your budget can carry.
This is a method, not a list. For categories ranked on fees, limits and authentication rules, start with best things to resell in Europe and test its picks here. The page is part of our product sourcing guide, and every number in the worked example is an example, not market data.
Niche vs generalist: what the research has to answer
A specialist spots an underpriced listing in seconds because the research is done. Product research for resellers fills four cells per candidate:
| Question | What you record | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Do buyers want it here? | Share of new comparables gone by day 14 | Your two-week cohort |
| Can I price it quickly? | Spread of live asks | Asks on day 0 |
| How crowded is it? | Live comparables per exit | Search count vs cohort exits |
| What do fees and rules take? | Seller fee, free listing limit | The marketplace's own pages |
Decision rule: if you can't fill all four cells, you haven't researched the candidate. You've only heard of it.
Choose candidate brands and categories
- You can source it more than once a month from a channel you already use
- Your budget buys several items at once, not one
- You can judge condition and authenticity from photos
- The comparable is narrow enough to count: brand, line or model, size band, condition
"Nike" is too broad to count. "Kids' trainers, sizes 28–34, very good condition, vinted.pl" works. For trainers, split by size and condition as used sneaker pricing describes, or your spread will mostly measure size differences.
Sample live listings and track exits for two weeks
For each candidate, count live comparables on day 0. Start a cohort of listings that went live in the last day or two, and recheck the same listings on fixed days.
A gone listing left the market: it may have sold, been deleted or been reserved, so the rate is an estimate. The cohort method, with relists, refreshes and OLX's 30-day display period, is in how to check resale demand before you buy. Here you run it on all candidates in the same weeks.
- 1Day 0Count live comparables, start a cohort, note lower-quarter, median and upper-quarter asks
- 2Days 1 and 3Recheck the cohort, confirm exits, drop relists
- 3Day 7Record listings gone and each exit's last price
- 4Day 14Record listings gone; work out exit rate, spread and queue ratio
- 5ScoreApply gates, then rank candidates against each other
Count by hand in the normal site or app: Vinted's Terms (UK version from 30 April 2026, matching clause in the PL version) forbid bots, scraping programs and crawlers unless Vinted authorises them.
Keep one row per candidate. The rows below are examples.
| Candidate (example) | Marketplace | Live day 0 | Cohort | Gone day 7 | Gone day 14 | Median exit | Asks: lower quarter / median / upper quarter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A: men's branded rain jackets | vinted.pl | 60 | 20 | 4 | 9 | 170 zł | 140 / 180 / 240 zł |
| B: kids' trainers, sizes 28–34 | vinted.pl | 35 | 15 | 5 | 9 | 85 zł | 75 / 90 / 105 zł |
| C: one smartphone model | Allegro Lokalnie | 25 | 12 | 4 | 7 | 880 zł | 820 / 900 / 980 zł |
Compare price spread and competition
Example, from the rows above: spreads are (240 − 140) ÷ 180 = 56% for A, 30 ÷ 90 = 33% for B and 160 ÷ 900 = 18% for C. Queue ratios are 60 ÷ 9 = 6.7, 35 ÷ 9 = 3.9 and 25 ÷ 7 = 3.6. The queue ratio isn't days of supply; it only ranks candidates measured the same way.
- Wide spread, many exits: buyers exist, but details move the price. Budget research time per item.
- Tight spread, short queue: you can price from memory and your listing isn't buried. Specialise here.
- Wide spread, long queue: sellers are guessing and buyers can wait. Pass unless you buy far below the median exit.
B's 60% and C's 58% differ by less than one exit (about 8 points in a cohort of 12), so treat them as tied.
Factor in fees and category rules per marketplace
Checked 13 September 2026:
| Category | Vinted | OLX.pl, private user | Allegro Lokalnie | eBay UK, business seller |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Branded clothing | No seller commission on the price list | Moda: private column shows "-", not explained in Annex 3 | 7.9% on "Kup teraz" and auctions; 0 zł on local listings | 11.9% + per-order fee |
| Trainers | No seller commission | Moda: "-" | 7.9%; 0 zł local | 11.9%; 7% at £100 or more |
| Smartphones | No seller commission | 2 free listings | 4.9% (Elektronika) | Not in our research |
- OLX limits cap volume. A limit renews 30 days after the last listing it counted, and listings beyond it are paid at prices OLX shows during publication (our research doesn't record them). In Dom i Ogród, furniture gets 1 listing per 60 days.
- Allegro Lokalnie takes listings only from regular (private) Allegro accounts. Business accounts can buy there but not sell.
- Vinted's buyer fee weighs on cheap niches. On vinted.pl it is "usually" 5% + 2.90 zł. Example: 3.90 zł on a 20 zł item, almost a fifth of the price, but 12.90 zł on a 200 zł item. Vinted's updated Terms take effect on 5 October 2026 (Germany, France) and 8 October 2026 (UK, US, Poland), and press coverage (Value Added Resource, September 2026) reports the fee is being renamed "Vinted fee". Recheck after those dates.
- eBay UK charges business sellers by category; UK-based private sellers pay no final value fee outside Motors. reva doesn't support eBay, but the scoring transfers.
The Polish fee picture in full is in marketplace fees in Poland.
How to find a reselling niche: score and pick one
Gates first. A candidate that fails one is out, however it scores.
- Cash: your budget buys enough items at once to learn from
- Rules: the marketplace lets your account type list the volume you plan
- Profit floor: median exit minus fees and your expected buy price clears your minimum profit
Then rank survivors on each dimension: 3 for the best, 1 for the worst, a shared score when the gap is smaller than one exit.
Then write the niche down as limits: maximum price per model, minimum profit, sizes to skip. How to set buying rules has templates.
Revisit your research every season
A niche result has a date on it. Rerun the tracker when:
- The season you sell in is about to start: research winter jackets in autumn
- A marketplace changes its terms, such as Vinted's update on 5 and 8 October 2026
- A listing limit changes: OLX's changelog for Annex 3 (7 January 2026) lists changes to private limits
- Your own items in the niche sit unsold past the time you planned
Compare the same candidate season to season. If exit rate and spread both worsen while buy prices hold, the niche is crowding.
