Product Photos That Sell Second-Hand Items
A repeatable photo setup for resale listings on any marketplace.

- A second-hand photo set is evidence: every claim in the title and description (size, brand, flaws) needs a picture that proves it.
- Vinted's help, checked 13 Sept 2026, allows up to 20 photos and asks for the whole item in the first photo, natural daylight, no flash, no filters and no collages.
- Vinted lists 'poor quality photos' as a reason to hide a listing and stock photos as a reason to remove one; Flyp reports that plain white replacement backgrounds tend to trigger that stock-photo moderation.
- Change the backdrop physically instead of removing it in an app, and shoot one set you can reuse unedited on Vinted, OLX and Allegro Lokalnie.
- Shoot in batches with a fixed spot, fixed light and a fixed shot order, so every listing gets the same evidence shots without extra decisions.
Product photos for resale have a job shop photos don't: they prove the condition of this particular item. Shoot the whole item in daylight on a plain real surface, then add the back, the labels, every flaw and something that shows scale. Skip filters, collages and app-made white backgrounds, which can make an honest photo look like a stock image.
Below: the shot list, a home setup, the photo rules Vinted and OLX publish, the background-removal risk vendors report on Vinted, and a batch routine. Platform rules were read on 13 September 2026.
What buyers look for in second-hand photos
A buyer scrolling used jackets is asking "will what arrives match what I see?". Your photos answer three questions in order:
- Is it the thing I searched for? The whole item, straight on. Vinted's help page 48: "Show the entire item in the first picture. Don't use collages."
- Is it genuine and the right size? Readable brand label, size label, care tag.
- What is wrong with it? Every flaw, close enough to judge.
The third question is where used listings differ from new ones. Vinted UK counts undisclosed damage and incorrect size as significantly not as described (help 1090), while "minor differences such as lighting" are not. OLX's Pakiet Ochronny tests a claim against your title, description and photos. A photo of the stain protects your payout.
Decision rule: if you would mention it when handing the item over in person, it needs a photo.
Light and background at home
Vinted's help asks for "pictures taken in natural daylight, over those taken in the lamplight" and says "don't use flash or filters". The Polish page says the same. You need a fixed spot, not equipment.
| Setup choice | Do this | Avoid this |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Indirect daylight from a window, item facing it | Ceiling lamp at night, flash, direct sun stripes |
| Flat lays | Wooden floor, plain bedsheet, light rug | Patterned duvet, cluttered desk |
| Hanging shots | Plain door or wall, hanger on a hook | Wardrobe full of other clothes |
| Colour | Compare screen and item in the same light before uploading | Warming or brightening sliders |
Colour is the flaw people forget. Vinted UK lists wrong colour as not as described, so if your phone turns navy into black, add a shot by the window and name the colour in the text.
The shot list: front, back, labels, flaws, scale
Vinted's branded-items help (601) sets a useful minimum: "Start by posting a photo of the entire item from the front. Show the back of the item in the following photo. Snap at least 3 close-up shots of certain details." It also asks for "labels, tags, QR codes, or bar codes".
- 11. Whole item, frontStraight on, filling most of the frame. This is your grid thumbnail.
- 22. Whole item, backSame distance and light.
- 33. LabelsBrand and size, readable. Care tag for clothing, serial or date codes for bags and devices.
- 44. Detail close-upsLogo, stitching, zips, soles.
- 55. Every flawOne close-up per flaw, with a finger pointing at it.
- 66. ScaleA tape measure across the item, or the item worn without your face.
Some categories need more. Vinted's branded-items page lists the insole, outsole and shoebox for footwear, and the serial number, heat stamps and inner label for handbags. How to spot fakes before you buy explains why buyers look for exactly those shots.
Example: a used wool coat with a missing button and pilling under the arms. Front, back, brand label, composition tag, button close-up, pilling close-up, tape across the shoulders: seven photos, and the text can say "missing one button (photo 5)". The wording side is in writing listing titles and descriptions.
Phone settings and editing limits
Any recent phone camera is enough. The settings that matter are the ones that change what the item looks like:
- Flash off (Vinted's help asks for no flash)
- Main lens; step closer instead of using digital zoom
- Portrait or blur mode off for whole-item shots
- Tap to focus on the label or flaw before a close-up
- No beauty, colour or "vivid" filters
- Keep your face out of frame, as Vinted's help suggests
Editing in one rule: crop, straighten and rotate freely; anything that changes colour, texture or background changes the evidence. eBay's US User Agreement lets sellers use image-editing and AI tools but keeps them responsible for accuracy, which is a sensible default everywhere.
Marketplace photo rules
These are the published rules this page could source. Allegro Lokalnie's photo requirements were not in the documents we read, so check its upload form.
| Marketplace | What the official pages say |
|---|---|
| Vinted | Up to 20 photos per listing (help 375 and 48). Photos "cannot be replaced with stock photos, photos from ads and watermarked images" (Catalogue Rules); the UK Terms add they must not be "taken from the internet" |
| Vinted: hidden or removed | Help 62 lists "poor quality photos" as a reason a listing is hidden, and stock photos as a reason it is removed |
| Vinted: account signals | Help 1120 names "stock or professional photos" among signals of commercial selling |
| OLX | Pakiet Ochronny covers an item that doesn't match the listing's title, description or photos, including undisclosed damage and a "new" item showing wear |
Vinted's Terms are changing: a new version takes effect on 8 October 2026 in the UK and Poland, and 5 October in Germany and France. The rules above are from the version in force on 13 September 2026, so re-read the photo rules once the new Terms apply. The wider rulebook is in Vinted listing rules resellers break most often.
Background removal: when it helps and when it hurts
Cut-out apps promise a clean shop look. On Vinted that look is the problem. Flyp, a US crosslisting tool, writes in its Vinted help: "Don't replace the backgrounds of your photos with a plain white background. This tends to trigger Vinted's 'no stock photos' auto moderation." That is a vendor's claim, not a published Vinted rule, but it fits Vinted's own: stock photos get listings removed, and professional-looking photos are a commercial-selling signal.
- Looks like a stock image
- Stain by the pocket not visible
- No label shot
- Labels readable
- Stain close-up
- Tape measure for scale
Photographing in batches
Shooting one item at a time means setting up light, surface and tape measure again for every listing. Batch it:
- Sort items by how you shoot them: flat lay, hanging, shoes, small objects.
- Prep them all: lint roller, empty pockets, mark each flaw with a removable sticker.
- Shoot in one daylight window, in the same shot order every time.
- Photograph a numbered tag first for each item, so sets are easy to split in your camera roll.
- Move each set into an album named with the item ID.
The album name then matches the ID in your stock spreadsheet, so a buyer's question weeks later leads straight to the right photos. If listings still get views but few favourites after a reshoot, why your Vinted items aren't selling walks through the rest of the funnel.
Reusing photos across platforms
One honest set works everywhere. The crosslisting guide builds each item around a master listing whose photos you shoot once on a real background and upload unedited to every marketplace.
- Upload the original files. A screenshot of your OLX listing looks like a photo taken from the internet.
- No watermarks or shop logos. Vinted bans watermarked images and references to external sites or platforms.
- Reshoot when condition changes. Claims are judged against what the listing shows.
The step-by-step routine for Vinted is in how to crosslist to Vinted.
