Should You Include Shipping in Your Price?

Who pays delivery differs by marketplace, and so does the price that looks cheapest to a buyer.

Key takeaways
  • On Vinted the buyer always pays for shipping — you cannot build it into the item price as a separate charge.
  • On Allegro, commission applies to item price plus delivery cost — whether you show shipping separately or include it in the price, the commission base is the same.
  • On Allegro Lokalnie, Smart! buyers get free delivery above 45 zł (or 49.90 zł if Smart! was activated after 1 March 2026); non-Smart! buyers pay a flat 10.95 zł regardless of carrier.
  • For cheap items, adding shipping to the price often makes your listing look expensive compared to competitors.
  • Heavy items benefit less from free delivery because the price increase needed to cover shipping outweighs the conversion benefit.

The short answer is: it depends on which marketplace you sell on. Vinted does not let you charge for shipping separately — the buyer pays and chooses shipping, and you receive a prepaid label. On Allegro, commission is calculated on the item price plus delivery cost, so whether you show shipping separately or build it into the price, the commission is the same. Allegro Lokalnie has fixed carrier prices (10.95 zł for InPost, 10.49 zł for One Box) and Smart! changes what the buyer sees. Vinted has announced updated Terms taking effect 8 October 2026 for Poland.

This page breaks down the math for each marketplace, shows when "free delivery" pricing helps and when it hurts, and gives you a checklist to decide per listing. For a full guide to pricing your items, see the resale pricing guide.

How each marketplace handles delivery

Vinted: buyer pays, you cannot add it to the price. The buyer pays for shipping and chooses the carrier from your enabled options. You get a prepaid Vinted-generated label and have 5 business days to ship, or the order is cancelled automatically. You can request 3 or 5 extra business days from the buyer, but they may refuse. There is no way to include shipping as a separate line item — the buyer always sees the item price separately from delivery costs. For full details on Vinted shipping rules, see our marketplace shipping rules guide.

Allegro: commission is charged on price plus delivery. When you sell with delivery, Allegro's commission applies to the total the buyer pays, including shipping. For example, if you list an item at 100 zł and add 20 zł delivery, the 10% commission (an illustrative rate — real rates range from 2.5% to 11.5% depending on category) is calculated on 120 zł, not 100 zł. For the full fee structure, see our Allegro fees guide.

Allegro Lokalnie: fixed carrier prices, Smart! changes the picture. Shipping prices are fixed: Allegro Paczkomaty InPost costs 10.95 zł, and Allegro One Box costs 10.49 zł. If both you and the buyer have Smart!, Allegro covers the first 6 parcels per quarter — after that, you pay 4.99 zł per free Smart! sale. A buyer without Smart! (or with an order under 45 zł, or under 49.90 zł if Smart! was activated after 1 March 2026) pays a flat 10.95 zł delivery regardless of the carrier you choose.

What the buyer compares

Buyers do not compare item prices in isolation. On Vinted, the total cost to the buyer is item price + delivery + Buyer Protection fee. The fee is typically 5% plus a fixed amount (2.90 zł in Poland), so a 100 zł item with 15 zł shipping costs the buyer roughly 122.90 zł (100 + 15 + 5% of 100 + 2.90).

On Allegro and Allegro Lokalnie, buyers see the total at checkout: item price, delivery cost, and any additional fees. Say you list an item at 80 zł and add 20 zł for delivery — the buyer sees 100 zł.

Most buyers compare totals. Showing a lower item price but adding shipping later can feel like a bait-and-switch, while a higher all-in price may lose you to a competitor who shows a lower item price.

The math of "free delivery"

When you include shipping in the price, you raise the total the buyer sees. Here is what happens on a marketplace with commission:

What happens when you include 20 zł delivery in a 100 zł listing
Sale price120 zł
  • Commission at illustrative 10%12 zł
  • Delivery cost you pay the carrier20 zł
  • Your cost (what you paid for the item)40 zł
  • Your profit48 zł
Illustrative example: commission rate and delivery cost vary by category and carrier.Illustrative example, not market data

If you instead showed 100 zł item + 20 zł shipping separately, the buyer sees the same 120 zł total, and the commission is calculated on the same amount.

For Vinted, this entire discussion is moot — the buyer pays shipping, not you.

When bundling shipping into the price helps

For higher-priced items, adding a small amount to the price to cover shipping is a small percentage increase and may improve conversion. Say you have a jacket priced at 200 zł — adding 10–15 zł to cover shipping is unlikely to push buyers away, especially if competitors show similar total prices. Our rule of thumb: higher-priced items can usually absorb a small shipping markup without hurting conversions.

Local pickup is an alternative that avoids shipping costs entirely. If you can meet buyers locally, you eliminate the shipping question. For items you plan to ship in boxes, see also our guide on pricing bundles and lots.

When bundling hurts

For cheap items, adding 10 zł to cover shipping can double the item price. Say you list an item at 35 zł with shipping shown separately — it looks cheaper than a 45 zł listing with "free delivery," even though the total is the same in both cases. Our rule of thumb: cheap items should show shipping separately to avoid looking expensive. Price-sensitive buyers on Vinted filter by maximum price, and if your all-in price exceeds their filter, your listing becomes invisible.

Heavy items cost more to ship. Say you have a heavy item and you add the shipping cost to a low listing price — you are raising the price by a large percentage to cover a cost that may not matter to buyers comparing totals. For example, a 30 zł item with 10 zł shipping added becomes a 40 zł listing — that's a 33% increase. The conversion benefit rarely outweighs the margin loss.

A rule you can apply per listing

Use this checklist to decide whether to show shipping separately or build it into your price:

  • Is this a higher-priced item? If yes, a small price increase to cover shipping is usually fine.
  • Is this a cheap item? If yes, show shipping separately to avoid looking expensive.
  • Does the marketplace charge commission on delivery cost? If yes, remember that the commission is the same either way.
  • Is the item heavy (for example, shipping costs over 10 zł)? If yes, keep shipping separate or offer local pickup.
  • Does the marketplace have price filters your all-in price might exceed? If yes, check the filter thresholds before raising your price.

Frequently asked questions

Should I offer free shipping when reselling?
It depends on the marketplace and your item. On Vinted the buyer always pays for shipping, so you cannot add it to the price. On Allegro and Allegro Lokalnie, whether you show shipping separately or build it into the price, the commission is calculated on the same total. For cheap or heavy items, covering shipping often hurts your margin more than it helps conversions.
Does Allegro charge commission on the delivery cost?
Yes. Allegro's commission is calculated on the item price plus the delivery cost that the buyer sees. For example, if you list an item at 100 zł with 20 zł delivery, commission applies to 120 zł, not just 100 zł. Whether you call it 'free delivery' or show shipping separately, the commission base is the same.
Who pays shipping on Vinted?
The buyer pays for and chooses shipping on Vinted. The seller receives a prepaid label and has 5 business days to ship or the order is cancelled automatically. You can ask the buyer for 3 or 5 extra business days, but they may refuse. There is no way to include shipping as a separate charge — the buyer always sees the item price separately from delivery.
How do I add shipping to my price without losing sales?
Decide per listing based on the item's price range and weight. For higher-priced items, the buyer is less sensitive to a 10–15 zł price increase. For cheap items, adding 10 zł to the price can make your listing look expensive compared to competitors who list the item at 35 zł plus 10 zł shipping. Check the marketplace's price filters — if your all-in price exceeds a filter threshold, you lose visibility.
