When to Lower Your Price (and When Not To)
A calm markdown plan for stale listings instead of panic discounts.

- Cut the price only when buyers are looking but not acting: favourites or messages with no offers. Few views point to title, category or photos first.
- Set review points before you list, from your own median days to sell for the category, and push a review back while a Vinted Bump or an Allegro Lokalnie auction is still running.
- Each markdown moves one price level down, so the size of the cut comes from the gap between two levels in your comparables, not from a fixed percentage.
- The floor is the higher of fast sell and break-even. One full review period at the floor without an offer means stop cutting and change channel.
- Edit the price instead of deleting and relisting: Vinted's Terms restrict repeated re-listing, and OLX treats a relist within 14 days as a duplicate in free and limited categories.
Lower the price on a listing when it has had normal exposure and buyers show interest without making offers. Decide at a review point you set before listing, not when the item feels old. At each review, step down one level of your price ladder, and stop at your fast-sell price or your break-even, whichever is higher.
Marketplace rules were checked on 13 September 2026; the zł prices and review days are examples.
Is it really a price problem?
A markdown only fixes buyers who saw your item and decided it costs too much, not buyers who never saw it. Read the signals your marketplace shows, in order, before you touch the price. The mirror question — was the price too high from the start? — has its own diagnosis in how to tell if an item is overpriced.
- 1ViewsFew views: fix title, category and first photo. Don't cut the price yet.
- 2Favourites or savesViews but no saves: compare your first photo and price with similar listings.
- 3OffersSaves but no offers: buyers like it but hesitate at the price. This is the markdown case.
- 4SaleOffers below your floor: demand is there. Counter at the floor instead of cutting.
Price and reach overlap. Vinted's "Our platform" page (§8) lists "how long ago the item was uploaded, the price and the brand" among ranking attributes, next to views, clicks and favourites. A cut on a listing nobody sees can't tell you whether it failed on price or on reach. Each drop-off stage on Vinted is worked through in why your Vinted items aren't selling.
When to lower price on listings: set review points first
We found no published average time to sell on any of the three marketplaces, so use your own records: the median days to sell of your last similar items. How long it takes to sell on Vinted shows how to measure it or estimate it from comparables that left the market.
Place reviews at multiples of that median. Example: your last jackets sold after a median of 12 days, so reviews fall on days 12, 24 and 36. Then adjust for each marketplace's clock:
- Vinted Bump: lasts 3 or 7 days (help page 340), and the Our platform page (§8) says it "temporarily affects an item's ranking in feeds and search results". If one is running at a review point, review when it ends.
- OLX: a listing runs 30 days from publication, though some subcategories offer other periods (Terms §8.8, effective 27 April 2026). Put a review inside that window rather than after it.
- Allegro Lokalnie: an auction lasts 7 days. Review at its end, not halfway through.
- Day 0
List at market ask, 225 zł. Write down the floor (170 zł) and the review dates.
- Day 12, review 1
Favourites, no offers. Step down to fair value, 200 zł.
- Day 24, review 2
Still no offers. Step down to balanced, 185 zł.
- Day 36, review 3
Messages but no offer. Step down to fast sell, 170 zł, the floor.
- Day 48, channel change
No offer at the floor. Stop cutting: bundle it, make a lot or move it to another marketplace.
Step down one price level at a time
Your levels exist before the first markdown: fast sell, balanced, fair value, market ask and max profit, each with its own evidence. Choosing a price level explains where each comes from. The markdown rule: each review moves the price one level down, never two.
Example ladder for the jacket:
| Level | Price | Built from |
|---|---|---|
| Max profit | 250 zł | at most fair value × 1.25 |
| Market ask | 225 zł | median of comparable live asks |
| Fair value | 200 zł | median of comparables that left the market |
| Balanced | 185 zł | midpoint of fast sell and fair value |
| Fast sell | 170 zł | near the cheapest quarter of comparable asks |
We say "left the market", not "sold": a vanished listing isn't proof of a sale, as the data methodology page explains.
Why not a round 20% off? From 225 zł that lands at 180 zł, skipping fair value and balanced in one go. If the jacket then sells, you never learn whether 200 zł would have done it.
At each review, add any new exits to your comparables. If fair value has moved, rebuild the ladder first, then step down from the new one. Collecting those comparables and judging your confidence in them is covered in the resale pricing guide.
How big each markdown should be
The cut is the gap between two levels, measured against the price you're leaving:
Example on the jacket ladder: 225 → 200 zł is 11.1%, 200 → 185 zł is 7.5%, and 185 → 170 zł is 8.1%.
The steps aren't equal. A tight spread of comparables gives small steps; a wide spread gives bigger ones. Two decision rules:
- If two levels are so close that a buyer scrolling search wouldn't notice the difference, treat them as one level and go to the lower price.
- If one gap is much bigger than the others, your comparables are probably thin or mixed. Split that step in half and recheck the comparables before the next review.
Price drops and notifications to interested buyers
Some third-party blogs claim a Vinted price cut of 5% or more notifies members who favourited the item. The Vinted help pages and Terms we read on 13 September 2026 don't describe this, and we haven't tested it, so treat it as unconfirmed and don't size a cut to cross a 5% line.
One documented Vinted rule does matter: during a Bump you can lower the price but not raise it, and the Bump cost stays the same (help page 340). A cut mid-Bump breaks the one-change-per-review rule: if the item sells, you can't tell whether the Bump or the price did it. Let the Bump finish, then review.
Whether OLX or Allegro Lokalnie send price-drop alerts is not stated publicly, which is not the same as "they don't". Build a schedule that works with no alert at all.
When to stop cutting and change channel
The floor is the higher of your fast-sell level and your break-even price after any marketplace fee and any shipping you pay. The break-even calculator works that number out backwards from your costs.
- Example A: break-even 150 zł, fast sell 170 zł. The floor is 170 zł.
- Example B: break-even 180 zł, fast sell 170 zł. The floor is 180 zł, so the last markdown is balanced at 185 zł, the lowest level still above it. Pricing at exactly 180 zł only recovers your costs: an exit choice, not a markdown.
If the item sits at the floor for one full review period without an offer, stop. Another cut tells you nothing new. How to liquidate unsold inventory compares the exits from there: bundles, lots and other marketplaces.
Don't disguise a markdown as delete-and-relist:
- Vinted: the Terms say users must not "delete and re-list the same Item multiple times or multiple Items in bulk". Updated Terms take effect on 5 October 2026 in Germany and France and on 8 October 2026 in the UK, US and Poland. Press coverage of the UK/US/AU update (Value Added Resource) reports the relisting rules unchanged; check the live Terms after those dates.
- OLX: in free and limited categories only one listing for the same item is allowed at a time, and a listing you ended less than 14 days earlier still counts. Edit the price instead.
Markdown schedule template
Fill this in when you list, not when the item is already stale.
| Field | Example | Yours |
|---|---|---|
| Starting level and price | Market ask, 225 zł | |
| Median days to sell (your category) | 12 days | |
| Review points | Days 12, 24, 36 | |
| Evidence that triggers a cut | Favourites or messages, no offers | |
| Evidence that blocks a cut | Few views; Bump or auction still running | |
| Break-even after fees and shipping | 150 zł | |
| Floor (higher of fast sell and break-even) | 170 zł | |
| Exit after one period at the floor | Bundle, lot or another marketplace |
At each review, run the same check:
- No Bump or auction still running since the last review?
- Where do buyers drop off: views, favourites or offers?
- Have new comparables left the market, and does the ladder need rebuilding?
- Is the lower level still at or above the floor?
- Did I change only one thing (price, photo or title) this round?
