How to Start Reselling With a Small Budget

A cautious first-month plan that treats your starting cash as stock, not spending money.

By reva editorial teamUpdated 8 min read
A small starting budget split into test stock, shipping supplies and a reserve, next to a loop of selling before buying more
Key takeaways
  • Sell things you already own first: it turns clutter into a stock budget, teaches you deadlines and payouts without buying risk, and fits what a standard Vinted account is for.
  • Split the budget before the first purchase into test stock, supplies and a reserve, and write a stop-loss rule. Items you can test = stock budget ÷ your maximum buy price.
  • Fee models decide whether a small flip survives: no seller commission on Vinted, 0 zł on Allegro Lokalnie local listings but 7.9% on Kup teraz, free domestic selling for eligible private sellers on eBay.co.uk and eBay.de, and 11% plus fixed fees on eBay.pl (checked 13 Sept 2026).
  • Low fees are not permission: Vinted bans commercial listings on standard accounts, so bought stock needs a marketplace and account type that fit it.
  • Reinvest only from sold items: the cost goes back to the stock pot, the profit refills the reserve first, and nothing new is bought while unsold stock is at your cap.

To start reselling with little money, sell what you already own first, turn that cash into a fixed stock budget, and buy only in one category you can judge. List where fees take little or nothing: Vinted charges sellers no commission, Allegro Lokalnie takes 0 zł on local listings, and eBay.co.uk and eBay.de let eligible private sellers sell domestically without a final value fee. Then keep one rule: sell before you buy more.

Below is a first-month plan in zł and euros. Budgets, prices and counts are examples; fee facts come from marketplace pages read on 13 September 2026. For the whole route to a business, see how to start reselling in Europe.

Start by selling what you already own

Your own things are stock you have already paid for. Selling them teaches listing, packing, deadlines and payouts before stock money is at risk. It also fits a standard Vinted account, which Vinted says is "for your own benefit and not for any professional reasons". Learn two rules on your own items:

  • Shipping deadline: Vinted cancels an order automatically if it isn't shipped within 5 business days (UK and PL help pages).
  • Tax in Poland: a private item held more than six months, counted from the end of the month of purchase, is not subject to income tax when sold occasionally; sold sooner, it is taxable (Ministry of Finance). General information, not tax advice.

Decision rule: if an own item hasn't sold after two price cuts, keep it or give it away rather than paying to promote it.

Set a starting budget and a stop-loss rule

Split the money before you open a single listing.

Part Example: 500 zł Example: €100 Pays for
Test stock 300 zł €60 Purchase prices only
Shipping supplies 50 zł €10 Mailers, tape, labels
Reserve 150 zł €30 Travel, a buyer fee when you source on Vinted, return postage

Two separate example budgets, not a currency conversion.

The reserve covers costs that land after a sale: on OLX, an accepted Pakiet Ochronny claim means a return at the seller's cost (Annex 8).

items you can test = test stock budget ÷ your maximum buy price per item

Example: a 300 zł stock pot and a 60 zł maximum buy price give five test items; €60 at €15 a piece gives four.

Example stop-loss rule, written before the first buy: "If the stock pot falls below 150 zł and nothing sells for 14 days, I stop buying and cut prices to break-even."

Picking one category you can judge

  • I can name three details that change the price (model, size, material, year)
  • I can spot damage or missing parts from listing photos
  • I can find comparable items in the same condition where I'll sell
  • The marketplace's free listing limit in this category covers my first batch

On OLX, Annex 3 (effective 7 January 2026) gives private sellers 1 free furniture listing per 60 days, so a furniture test batch means paying for listings.

Decision rule: if you can't tell a fake or damaged unit from the photos, it's not your first category. The 60-second deal check turns that judgement into a routine.

Where to sell first when you start reselling with little money

On a small flip, the seller fee comes straight out of your margin.

Selling fees for a private seller

Low fees are half the choice; the other half is what your account may sell:

  • Your own items: Vinted fits.
  • Items bought to resell: Vinted's Catalogue Rules say, "We do not allow our individual users to list any items which are intended to be sold for commercial purposes", and its Polish help page says Pro is not open to Polish businesses. On Vinted in Poland, sell your own things, not bought stock.
  • Allegro Lokalnie and OLX: Lokalnie accepts listings only from regular accounts, and OLX's private or business declaration covers your whole OLX activity. Poland defines business activity as organised, continuous and profit-oriented; our reading is that regular buying to resell leans towards it.

Pricing your first items without sold data

  1. Collect comparables in the same model, size and condition; note their asking prices.
  2. Check again a few days later. A listing that left the market may have sold or been removed, so its last price is only an estimate. Finding sold comps goes deeper.
  3. Adjust for condition you can prove in photos; how condition changes resale price ties grade to price.
  4. Set your floor after the seller fee.
floor price = (purchase price + packaging + travel + minimum profit) ÷ (1 − seller fee %)

Example in zł: a jacket bought for 40 zł, 3 zł packaging, a 30 zł minimum profit, sold with Kup teraz on Allegro Lokalnie (7.9%): floor = 73 ÷ 0.921 = 79.26 zł. As a 0 zł local listing, the floor is 73 zł.

Example in euros: a €12 buy, €1 packaging and an €8 minimum profit, sold on Vinted in a euro market with no seller commission: floor = €21. The resale profit calculator runs both with fee presets.

Decision rule: if your floor sits above most live asks in the same condition, you overpaid. Sell near the cheapest comparable and lower your maximum buy price next time.

reva's Scout (live) shows a five-level price ladder for finds on Vinted, OLX and Allegro Lokalnie. Its fair value is the median of comparables that left the market: an estimate to check against your floor, not a sale record.

Reinvesting: the "sell before you buy more" rule

The sell-before-you-buy loop
  1. 1Sell and get paidShip inside the deadline; wait for the payout
  2. 2Record itSale price, fee, shipping, packaging, profit
  3. 3Return the costThe purchase price goes back to the stock pot
  4. 4Refill the reserveProfit tops the reserve up first
  5. 5Buy one itemOnly if unsold items are below your cap
Example routine. Set your own cap and reserve level.

Example cap: with a 300 zł stock pot and a 60 zł maximum buy price, hold at most five unsold items.

Log each item in the reseller inventory and profit tracker (semicolon version for Polish Excel).

Mistakes that drain a small budget

Mistake What it costs Rule
Sourcing on Vinted without the buyer fee Usually 5% + 2.90 zł in Poland. Example: a 60 zł item costs 65.90 zł before shipping Your maximum buy price covers everything you pay
Paying for promotion early Vinted Bump and OLX promotion prices appear only when you buy them No promotion spend in month one
Manual relists on eBay.co.uk They count against the 300 free listings; automatic relists don't Use automatic relists

When to move to a bigger budget

Move up after one full cycle: every first-batch item sold, cut to break-even or written off. Judge it against targets written down before you started:

ROI = profit ÷ (purchase price + extra costs) share of stock sold = items sold ÷ (items at start + items added)

Worked example (made-up numbers, not a target): four of five items sold; they cost 240 zł plus 12 zł packaging and left 90 zł profit. ROI = 90 ÷ 252 = 35.7%; share sold = 4 ÷ 5 = 80%. No public source gives a benchmark, so compare with your own targets.

  • Every first-batch item has costs, fee, shipping and sale date recorded
  • My results meet the targets I wrote down, and the reserve is full
  • My account type still fits what I'm doing

Platforms report sellers under DAC7 from 30 sales or more than €2,000 in a calendar year; being reported is not a tax (Ministry of Finance). In Poland, the unregistered-activity route caps revenue at 10,813.50 zł per quarter from 1 January 2026, and above it CEIDG registration is due within 7 days (biznes.gov.pl). General information, not tax advice; ask a tax adviser.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start reselling with 100 euros?
Yes, as a small test, not an income. Cap every buy: at €15 per item, €60 of stock buys four items. For your own items, Vinted in a euro market takes no seller commission. On eBay.de, the private-seller fee is zero only when delivery stays inside Germany. No source gives a typical return on €100, so measure your own four items.
What should a beginner resell first?
Things you already own, so a mistake with price, photos or shipping costs time rather than stock money. Then pick one category where you can name the details that move the price, such as model, size, material or defects. No public data ranks categories by what sells best, so choose by what you can judge from a photo.
Should I sell my own clothes before buying stock?
Yes. The money becomes your stock budget, you learn deadlines and payouts without buying risk, and it is what a standard Vinted account is for: personal, not professional, use. In Poland, a private item held more than six months is not subject to income tax when sold (gov.pl). General information, not tax advice.
How do I decide when to reinvest my first profits?
From your own record, not someone else's numbers. Reinvest only when every item's costs are recorded, the reserve is back at its starting level, and unsold items are below your cap. Before month one, write down the ROI and share of stock sold that would justify a bigger budget, then compare your first full batch with it.
