Are Clothing Bales Worth It? Do the Maths First

Graded, unsorted and vintage bales, judged by the numbers suppliers leave out.

An opened clothing bale sorted into three piles: pieces to list, pieces for a bundle and pieces to clear
Key takeaways
  • A bale is worth buying only if (pieces × hit rate × share that sells × expected price) minus fees, packaging and your hours, plus what the remainder recovers, beats the bale cost by your minimum profit.
  • Hit rate is the input suppliers leave out. In this page's example, the bale breaks even at about 25% of pieces worth listing when hours are counted, and at about 18% when they are not.
  • Turn the formula into a ceiling price per kilo before you order. In the same example, dropping the hit rate from 30% to 20% cuts the ceiling from about 28 zł/kg to about 17 zł/kg.
  • Vinted lists bulk-bought or dropshipped low-value goods among its signals of commercial selling, and Vinted Pro is not open in Poland or Germany (official list, 13 Sept 2026).

Clothing bales are worth it only when the share of pieces you can sell covers the bale price, your sorting and listing hours and the leftovers, and still leaves your minimum profit. That share, the hit rate, is the one number supplier blogs don't give you, and it decides the result more than the price. So work out the highest price per kilo your hit rate can carry before you order, and pass on any bale that costs more.

Below: a supplier-neutral formula, a labelled worked example, a way to estimate hit rate before buying, and the account rules for bulk-bought stock. Platform facts were checked on 13 September 2026; the one supplier price is marked as such, and every other number is an example.

What you actually get in a bale

A bale is a compressed batch of mixed second-hand clothing sold by weight or by the unit. The supplier decides what's in it before you see it:

Bale type What the supplier controls What stays your problem
Unsorted Only the source and weight Hit rate unknown, the most sorting, the biggest remainder
Graded (labels such as "Cream", "Grade A", "Grade B") Removes some weaker pieces What a grade excludes is the supplier's own definition
Vintage by category (denim, jackets, sportswear) Category and era Piece count and condition still vary
Selected packs Hand-picked pieces You pay for the picking; condition still needs checking

This table is our summary, not measured data. US Fripe's 2026 guide suggests asking whether stock is "Cream, Grade A, Grade B, or unsorted"; neither supplier guide we read says what share of a grade is sellable.

On price, the only figure in our research comes from a supplier: TVW Vintage Wholesale's guide (9 September 2025) quotes a sealed bale of about 45 kg at "around €200–€350 depending on category", and selected packs at about €8–€12 per kilo. That is a sales page, not an independent survey.

Before paying, get answers in writing:

  • Weight and approximate piece count
  • Grade name and what it excludes
  • Delivery cost to you
  • What happens if the contents don't match the description

Are clothing bales worth it? The formula

Run every bale through one formula, with delivery included in the bale cost:

bale result = pieces × hit rate × share sold × expected price − selling fees − packaging − hours × your hourly value − bale cost + what the remainder recovers

Hit rate is the share of pieces you would list at or above your minimum price. Share sold is how many of those listings actually sell within the window you care about. The rest of your listings join the remainder. Expected price should be the level where comparable items leave the market, not the asking prices you see. The resale pricing guide shows how to build that estimate.

Worked example with illustrative inputs. You sell on vinted.pl, whose price list shows no seller commission, and the buyer pays shipping, as Vinted's UK help page describes.

Line (illustrative) Calculation zł
Bale: 45 kg, 150 pieces, delivered Supplier price plus delivery 1,300
Pieces worth listing 150 × 30% = 45
Pieces sold within 8 weeks 45 × 80% = 36
Sales 36 × 55 zł 1,980
Selling fee 0% on Vinted 0
Packaging 36 × 2 zł −72
Hours 2.5 sorting + 11.25 listing + 6 packing = 19.75 h × 25 zł −494
Remainder (114 pieces) Sold as lots +150
Result 1,980 − 72 − 494 − 1,300 + 150 264

If you sell the same pieces on Allegro Lokalnie with "Kup teraz", Allegro's fee page lists 7.9% of item value (outside Elektronika), which takes about 156 zł from the 1,980 zł of sales.

Hit rate: how to estimate it before buying

You can't count a bale before it arrives, but you can measure your hit rate in the category first:

  1. Source single items first. On each rack or batch of listings in the category, note pieces handled and pieces you would list at your minimum price, bought or not. Sourcing in Polish lumpeks is a cheap place to build that log.
  2. Buy the smallest unit first. A selected pack or small bale gives you a real count.
  3. Count your first bale. Record pieces, pieces listed and pieces sold by week.

Decision rule: plan on the lowest hit rate you have recorded, not the average.

The curve shows why. With the example inputs above, the result swings from a loss to a profit across a narrow band of hit rates:

Turn it into a price per kilo

Suppliers quote by the bale or the kilo, so turn the formula into a ceiling:

max bale price = sales − fees − packaging − hours × hourly value + remainder − minimum profit max price per kg = max bale price ÷ kg

Example: with a 300 zł minimum profit, the bale above can cost at most 1,980 − 72 − 494 + 150 − 300 = 1,264 zł, about 28 zł per kilo. At a 20% hit rate (24 pieces sold, 14 hours), the ceiling falls to 1,320 − 48 − 350 + 150 − 300 = 772 zł, about 17 zł per kilo. For each listed piece's floor price, use the break-even calculator.

reva doesn't price bales. Scout estimates single listings on Vinted, OLX and Allegro Lokalnie, which gives you the expected price for each piece type you plan to list.

Sorting and listing time as a cost

The supplier guide quoted above converts pack prices into a cost per item and stops there. Your hours scale with three different counts, so log them separately on your first bale: sorting scales with every piece (1 minute each in the example), cleaning, photos and listing with pieces worth listing (15 minutes), and packing with pieces sold (10 minutes). Set the hourly value at what the same hours would earn you elsewhere.

Decision rule: if the result is positive only on the cash-only line, the bale pays you a wage below your hourly value, not a margin.

The unsold remainder and how to clear it

The remainder is every piece not sold within your window: rejects plus listings that sat. In the example that's 114 of 150 pieces.

  • Vinted: a bundle must be labelled as one, with one total price, and its pieces can't also be listed separately (Catalogue Rules). The Terms forbid deleting and re-listing items in bulk.
  • OLX: a listing must state whether it is a single item, multiple units or a set.
  • Allegro Lokalnie: local listings carry a 0 zł sale fee.

Value the remainder at what you would accept this month; if unsure, count it as zero minus disposal cost. Exits by channel are in how to liquidate unsold inventory.

Account risk: bulk-bought stock on personal accounts

This risk has no number, but it can end the whole plan. Vinted's rules, checked 13 September 2026:

  • Individual accounts are for "your own benefit and not for any professional reasons", and individual users may not list items "intended to be sold for commercial purposes". Detection can mean hidden or removed listings and/or a ban.
  • The commercial-selling help page (UK and Poland) lists signals including bulk-bought or dropshipped low-value goods, many new or tagged items, and similar items in several colours or sizes.
  • Vinted Pro's official country list is Italy, Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, Belgium and the UK. Poland and Germany are not on it.

Vinted's updated Terms take effect on 5 October 2026 in Germany and France and on 8 October 2026 in the UK, the US and Poland. Press coverage of the UK, US and Australia update (Value Added Resource, September 2026) reports no change to Pro rules; recheck the live Terms after those dates.

Allegro Lokalnie lets only regular (private) Allegro accounts publish listings; business accounts can buy but not sell. OLX's Terms define a Business User as anyone using OLX in connection with business activity, and that declaration covers your whole activity on OLX.

When bales make sense and when they don't

  • You have a recorded hit rate for this category from single items or a small pack
  • The delivered price per kilo is below your ceiling at your lowest recorded hit rate
  • The result stays positive with your hours counted
  • The remainder has a named exit, or you've counted it as zero
  • You have a selling channel whose rules fit bulk-bought stock

Pass if any line fails. If your only channel is a personal Vinted account in Poland or Germany, the account risk sits outside the formula and no hit rate offsets it.

How bales compare with online listings, lumpeks and private lots is in the product sourcing guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a clothing bale cost in Europe?
Treat any figure as a sales quote. One wholesaler's guide (TVW Vintage Wholesale, published 9 September 2025) says a sealed bale of about 45 kg costs around €200–€350 depending on category. Add delivery, convert at the day's rate, divide by the weight, and compare the price per kilo with the ceiling your own hit rate allows.
What percentage of a bale is sellable?
No independent source we found publishes it, and the supplier guides we read don't state one for their grades. It depends on grade, category and your own price floor, since a piece counts only if you would list it at or above your minimum price. Record pieces handled and pieces worth listing, first on single items, then on your first bale, and plan on the lowest rate.
Can I sell bale items on a personal Vinted account?
Vinted's rules say individual users may not list items intended to be sold for commercial purposes, and its signals include bulk-bought or dropshipped low-value goods. Listings can be hidden or removed, or the account banned. Vinted Pro is not open in Poland or Germany (official list, 13 September 2026), so take advice before building a bale habit on a personal account.
Are vintage bales better than graded bales?
No source we found compares their results, so neither wins by label. Measure the trade-offs yourself: price per kilo, pieces per kilo, how many pieces clear your minimum price and how much competition each faces. Put both offers into the same formula with your hit rate, comparable-backed prices, hours and remainder value, and buy the higher ceiling per kilo.
