Selling Used Furniture

Local demand and pickup logistics shape the price as much as the piece.

Key takeaways
  • Buyers ask three questions before price: exact measurements, honest condition, pickup terms — put all three in the listing and most messages answer themselves.
  • Price from local comparables that left the market: the worked example sets fair value at 200 zł (median of exits) and the opening ask at 220 zł.
  • Default transport rule: the buyer collects and pays; any delivery you offer is a separate fixed sum agreed in messages before the sale.
  • Run a dated price-drop schedule and end at a free listing: 220 zł at listing, 200 zł after two weeks, 160 zł after a month, giveaway after six.

How to sell used furniture comes down to accepting that this is a local trade: the buyer who can collect it this weekend is worth more than a distant one offering more money. Price from local comparables, put the three facts every buyer asks — measurements, condition, pickup terms — in the listing, and run a dated price-drop schedule with a giveaway as the fallback. The pricing method comes from the resale pricing guide, applied here to pieces that move by pickup on OLX and Allegro Lokalnie — the platform mechanics live in the OLX reselling guide and the Allegro Lokalnie guide.

What sells: flatpack brands, solid wood, everything else

Three groups behave differently. Flatpack furniture from brands with active catalogues sells on searchability: buyers know the model, search it by name, and compare against the new price, so a discontinued-line discount is your real competition. Solid wood — tables, chairs, drawers — sells on material and weight: the buyer cannot verify joinery from one photo, so close-ups of joints, drawers opened, and undersides do the selling. Everything else — MDF wardrobes, worn sofas, assembled flatpack nobody can carry — trades at clearance prices because the buyer is buying a logistics problem as much as furniture.

Decision rule: identify which group your piece belongs to before pricing, because the comparables differ. A solid-wood desk prices from other solid-wood desks nearby, not from flatpack desks shipped by parcel. If no comparable exists within driving distance, widen slowly and discount for distance — and check demand honestly before investing an afternoon in photos: the method is in how to check resale demand.

Measure, photograph, describe: the three facts buyers ask

Every serious message contains the same three questions: exact measurements, real condition, pickup logistics. Answer all three in the listing and you filter out the time-wasters before they write.

Measurements: width × depth × height in centimetres, taken at the widest points, plus ceiling height needed if the piece must be tilted through a doorway. Photographs: the whole piece in daylight against a plain wall, then close-ups of every flaw, then the detail shots — joints, drawer runners, undersides, labels. Description: material, brand and model if known, age, every flaw named, and the pickup facts — your district, the floor, whether a lift exists, whether you help carry.

Pricing from local comparables: worked example in zł

Furniture has no national price — a bookshelf prices differently in Warsaw and in a small town, because the buyer pool is whoever can drive to you. So collect five to ten live asks within driving distance, then watch which listings disappear over two weeks. Live asks are competition; the last prices of listings that left the market are your evidence — and a listing can vanish because it sold, was deleted or was withdrawn, so treat exits as approximate.

Say you watch a 180 cm bookshelf like yours. Live asks sit at 150, 180, 220, 260 and 320 zł; three comparable listings leave the market at 180, 200 and 220 zł. The median exit is 200 zł — your fair value — while the median ask, 220 zł, is only where sellers started. On the ladder from the price ladder, fast sell sits near 160 zł, fair value at 200, market ask at 220, and max profit stays at or below 250 (fair value × 1.25). Open at market ask if you can wait a month; open at fair value if the room needs emptying.

Pickup logistics: who carries, who pays, what to write

Default rule that keeps sales closed: the buyer collects, pays and arranges transport. Write it plainly — "collection from [district], third floor with lift, I help carry" — and half the flaky enquiries never happen. Bulky furniture mostly moves by private pickup arranged in messages, which sits outside marketplace payment systems: OLX's buyer protection applies to orders paid and shipped through OLX delivery, and its help pages describe the charge as inapplicable when both sides agree another payment or delivery method; Allegro Lokalnie's buyer protection is described in its help pages for buy-now purchases and for auctions, with different claim rules for each. For a handover you arrange privately, agree the essentials in writing before the day: the price, the floor, the lift, and what happens if the buyer does not show.

If you offer delivery, make it a business decision, not a favour: a fixed sum per zone, agreed before the sale, cash or transfer on handover, and only for routes you can serve. A 60 zł delivery promise on a 200 zł bookshelf is a loss the moment the buyer lives across the city.

Price-drop schedule for furniture that does not move

Furniture decays on the calendar, not on views — favourites arrive slowly, so waiting for signals can mean waiting forever. Set the schedule before you list, and follow it: market ask at listing; one step down after two weeks; fast-sell level after four; free after six, or when your own floor is gone. The mechanics of stepping down without deleting the listing are in when to lower your price.

When Price What you are testing
Day 0 220 zł (market ask) whether patient buyers exist at the top
Week 2 200 zł (fair value) the price exits happen at
Week 4 160 zł (fast sell) clearing the floor space
Week 6 free listing closing it out

Every step is a new message to watchers on most platforms, and a step to fast sell still beats six more weeks of a piece you have already stopped seeing.

When free pickup beats a listing price

Below a floor — say 150 zł in the worked example's town — the maths flips. A cheap listing still costs you photos, messages, negotiation and two no-show Saturdays, and buyers haggle hardest at the bottom of the market. A free listing does the same job with one photo and one message, ends in days, and the person who collects it is doing you a favour rather than the reverse.

Free also wins for pieces you cannot demo: a wardrobe that needs dismantling, a sofa up a narrow stairwell. The buyer knows the deal before they come, so the handover is short. Keep the paid listing for pieces with real comparables behind them — solid wood, current flatpack lines — and let free take the rest. Your floor is personal: it is your hours and your floor space, and no marketplace statistic can set it for you.

Frequently asked questions

What furniture sells fastest second-hand?
No marketplace publishes category speed data, so judge by structure: pieces that fit in a family car and need no tools to move sell fastest — flatpack items from current ranges, small solid-wood tables, chairs, desks and drawers. Oversized sofas and wardrobes wait for the one buyer with a van and a free weekend, which can be weeks. If your piece needs two people, a van and a screwdriver to move, expect a slower sale and price the wait in.
How do I price used furniture?
From local comparables, not from what the piece cost new. Find five to ten live asks within driving distance of the same item, then watch which listings disappear over two weeks and note their last prices. The median of those exits is your fair value; live asks sit above it as competition. In the worked example on this page, exits at 180, 200 and 220 zł put fair value at 200 zł, with a starting ask of 220 zł.
Who should pay for transport in a furniture sale?
The default that keeps sales moving: the buyer collects, pays for and arranges transport, and your listing says so. Write the pickup facts — district, floor, lift or no lift, whether you help carry. If you want to offer delivery, price it as a separate fixed sum agreed in messages before the sale, and only for routes you can actually serve. Never promise delivery in the listing text and work out the details after; that is where sales fall apart.
Is it worth selling cheap furniture at all?
Do the floor maths before you list. A cheap piece needs photos, a listing, messages, and often two no-show buyers before one turns up — hours of your time for maybe 100–150 zł (an example range, not data). If fair value lands under your own floor, give the piece away free: the listing still needs one photo and one message, the flat empties this weekend, and negotiation disappears, because nobody haggles over zero.
