Vinted and eBay compared for sellers in the UK, Germany and Poland: who pays the fee, account types and authentication
Key takeaways
  • Vinted takes no seller commission on its UK, German and Polish price lists; the buyer pays a fee of usually 5% + €0.70 in Germany, 5% + 2.90 zł in Poland and 3–8% + £0.30–£0.80 in the UK.
  • eBay's cost flips by country: no final value fee for UK-based private sellers (except Motors) or for EEA-resident private sellers on sales within Germany, but 11% for private sellers on eBay.pl.
  • Vinted standard accounts are for personal selling only and Vinted Pro is not open in Germany or Poland, so resellers there have no Vinted business account to move to today.
  • eBay authenticates fashion, trainers and handbags from £200 or €200 automatically and free to the seller; Vinted's Item Verification is optional and buyer-paid.
  • Updated Vinted Terms take effect on 5 October 2026 in Germany and France and 8 October 2026 in the UK and Poland; press reports rename the buyer charge "Vinted fee".

Vinted vs eBay comes down to who pays the fee where you live. Vinted charges sellers no commission on its UK, German and Polish price lists and adds a fee for the buyer. eBay's cost depends on country and account: UK-based private sellers pay no final value fee, EEA-resident private sellers pay none on eBay.de for sales within Germany, and private sellers on eBay.pl pay 11%.

Facts: official pages read on 13 September 2026, plus named press reports; neither app was tested.

Fee models compared: buyer fee vs seller commission

Vinted. Seller-side, the price lists show only Bump and Showcase. The buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee on every "Buy now" order, shown at checkout, at a "usual" rate that varies with the item, order value and bundles.

eBay. The seller pays unless a free-selling programme covers you: a percentage of the total sale, postage included, plus a per-order fee. On eBay.co.uk, buyers from UK-based private sellers pay a Buyer Protection fee instead: £0.10 plus 7% of the price up to £20, 4% from £20 to £300 and 2% from £300 to £4,000. eBay says that fee is included in the displayed item price.

Decision rule: as a UK private seller, neither platform takes commission. Once you trade, Vinted's UK Pro page says selling "doesn't cost you a cent"; eBay.co.uk charges business rates. Full tables: eBay UK fees for private and business sellers.

Vinted's updated Terms take effect on 5 October 2026 in Germany and France and 8 October 2026 in the UK and Poland. Value Added Resource reports the Buyer Protection fee becomes the "Vinted fee", so re-check the price list after your date. Formulas for 11 countries: Vinted fees by country.

Private vs business sellers on each

Vinted's standard accounts are "for your own benefit and not for any professional reasons", and individual users may not list items "intended to be sold for commercial purposes". Signals include revenue, many new items and identical items in several sizes.

Traders need Vinted Pro, open on 13 September 2026 in Italy, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, Belgium and the UK only; the Polish help page says Pro is not open to Polish businesses. In the UK, Vinted calls Pro a legal requirement under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. That is Vinted's summary, not legal advice; ask an adviser if unsure.

eBay lets anyone sell and changes the fee. In Clothes, Shoes & Accessories a UK business seller pays 11.9% plus £0.30 or £0.40 per order, and an eBay.de business seller 12% up to €990 plus €0.35 or €0.45; trainers drop to 7% from £100 or €100. Both pages exclude VAT.

Buyer protection and disputes

Vinted (UK help pages) eBay.co.uk
Buyer's window 2 days from Vinted's notice that the parcel should have arrived 30 days from delivery for not as described (longer if your return window is); 30 days from estimated delivery for not received
Change of mind No right from private sellers; 14 days from Pro sellers Private sellers who refuse returns must still deliver as described
Your side Buyer sends the return within 5 business days of your request; you get 2 days to inspect 3 business days to respond before escalation

eBay.de's Käuferschutz uses the same 30-day windows and 3 business days for your response. Rule: on eBay a claim can arrive a month after delivery, so keep condition photos and packing proof that long; on Vinted, keep them until the order completes.

Authentication for high-value items

eBay authenticates eligible items automatically, free to the seller, with no opt-out; a failed item comes back to you.

  • eBay.co.uk: fashion, trainers and handbags from £200; watches from £1,500; trading cards from £350; jewellery from £500.
  • eBay.de: sneakers, clothing and handbags from €200; watches from €1,500; jewellery from €500.
  • eBay.pl: not verified.

Vinted's Item Verification happens only if the buyer adds and pays for it: £10, €10 or 45 zł. Details: how Vinted item verification works.

Categories that suit each

  • Clothes from your own wardrobe: Vinted costs you nothing in all three countries; eBay matches that only in the UK and within Germany
  • Trainers from £100 or €100, sold as a business: eBay's 7% rate
  • Watches and jewellery above eBay's thresholds: authenticated free
  • Cars and motorbikes in the UK: excluded from eBay's free private selling
  • Tickets, gift cards, medicines, services: banned by Vinted's Catalogue Rules

Listing effort and tools

Vinted. The Terms ban "any kind of external software tools" such as bots and scrapers unless Vinted authorises them, and ban deleting and relisting "the same Item multiple times or multiple Items in bulk". Value Added Resource reports the October update leaves these rules unchanged in the UK.

eBay. The US User Agreement (effective 28 June 2026) allows generative-AI and image-editing tools for listings but bans "buy-for-me agents, LLM-driven bots" without eBay's permission. On UK, German and Polish private accounts, automatic relists are free; manual ones use your allowance.
