Reselling With a Full-Time Job
The constraint is not time. It is context switching.

- The constraint is not hours but context switching: deals die while you are at work, so move the watching into written rules and alerts.
- A workable baseline is 4–6 hours a week: two batching evenings, one weekend sourcing block, ten minutes a day for anything urgent.
- Shipping clocks you can keep with a day job: Vinted gives 5 business days to ship (UK, PL, FR, DE help pages); OLX wants confirmation within 72 hours and carrier handover within 3 working days.
- Weekday evenings are for batching — photos, listing, packing; decisions about money belong in weekend sourcing, when you are not tired.
- Automate the watching first; keep condition checks, buyer messages and the final checkout confirmation manual.
Reselling with a full time job works when the decisions stop depending on you being online. The real constraint is not the number of hours — it is context switching: an alert nobody answers, a buyer's question that waits nine hours, a parcel that misses its window because Thursday was a meeting day. The system below pushes the watching into rules and alerts, and saves your human hours for two batching evenings a week. The wider method sits in our reselling guide.
Where side-hustle resellers actually lose deals
Four losses repeat, and each one is a decision with a deadline attached:
- The alert that aged. A find below market value appears at 11:00 and is gone by 18:00, when you finally look. The loss is not the item; it is every future item you will keep missing the same way.
- The message that waited. A buyer asks about measurements at noon, buys elsewhere by evening. On marketplaces with many similar listings, response time decides who gets the sale.
- The window that closed. An order sits unshipped past the deadline and cancels itself — the money goes back to the buyer and the item is back on the rail.
- The tired purchase. A "bargain" at 22:30 that breaks your own price rules, and occupies a month of evenings paying for it.
None of these are solved by working faster. They are solved by taking the decision away from the moment.
Rules do the watching: buy criteria that work offline
A rule is a criterion precise enough to be checked without you: maximum buy price per category, condition grades you accept, minimum profit after fees, the brands and sizes you actually sell. Written down, it becomes an alert, and the alert becomes the employee who never sleeps through a find.
Start with three rules, not thirty — maximum price, minimum profit, condition — and add rules only when a missed find shows you which one was missing. How to phrase them and which thresholds hold up is covered in buying rules. The decision rule for weeknights: if a find needs research you cannot finish in five minutes, let it go. Items that fit your rules keep appearing; the ones that need a duel of tabs are where tired money gets lost.
The two-evening week: a batching schedule
Two fixed evenings carry the shop; the rest of the week the system runs itself:
- 1Tuesday evening, 60–90 minWork the alert queue, buy what fits the rules, shoot photos, prepare drafts
- 2Wednesday, 15 minPublish the drafts and answer messages — done in a commute or a lunch break
- 3Thursday evening, 60–90 minPack what sold, adjust prices on slow listings, answer remaining messages
- 4Friday and weekendParcels go out on the way to work or with the weekend shop
- 5Weekend sourcing block, ~2 hOne trip, one session — replaces all weekday browsing
The schedule bends; the principle does not: every task happens inside a batch, and no batch happens at 22:30 on a work night. If a fifth evening appears, add stock slowly — the limits in how much inventory to keep come from your hours as much as your capital.
Shipping deadlines you can keep with a day job
The deadlines are published; your job is to arrange life so they never bind. Vinted's UK, Polish, French and German help pages give 5 business days to ship before the order cancels automatically, and you can ask the buyer for 3 or 5 extra business days — they may refuse. OLX is tighter at the start: confirm the sale within 72 hours of the order, and hand the parcel to the carrier within 3 working days of accepting, or the buyer is refunded automatically.
Three habits make both easy on a work week: pack the same evening the order lands, while the label is fresh; keep a packed-parcel spot by the door; and make the drop-off part of an existing route — the commute, the school run, the Saturday shop. The full table of windows and what cancels an order is in marketplace shipping rules.
Weekend sourcing vs weekday listing
Money decisions belong in the weekend block, when you are not tired: one sourcing trip, one session, evaluated against your written rules and your capital ceiling. A Saturday morning at a bazaar or a thrift stop, or one hour with a watch list, replaces five evenings of distracted scrolling — and the pieces go into a prep basket, not into the washing machine at midnight.
Weekday evenings convert that basket into listings: wash, photograph, measure, draft. Two hours on Sunday afternoon can feed a whole week of 15-minute publishing slots. The division also protects you from the most expensive pattern in side-hustle reselling: sourcing every night because it feels like work, while nothing gets listed and the backlog becomes stock you cannot prep — inventory you should not have bought.
What to automate first (and what to leave manual)
Automate in the order the losses hurt:
- First, the watching. Rules and alerts, as above — they remove the largest loss, the find that aged.
- Then, the paperwork. Cost, dates and payouts go straight into your records the day they happen; a spreadsheet updated in batches beats one reconstructed at month end.
- Price maintenance. A scheduled ten minutes on the second evening to step down slow listings — or, once you are on them, early-access tools like reva's Boost change the price on your own listing and List prepares drafts for review.
Keep four things manual: condition judgement (photos lie by omission), negotiation and buyer messages (trust is the product), the final checkout confirmation (payment is a human decision), and quality control over the packed parcel. If you later get more time, a daily workflow shows what the schedule grows into, and reseller automation maps which tasks suit software and which never will.
